Established in 1876, Mothers’ Union is a Christian organisation that has been supporting families for over 140 years. They have over 4 million members worldwide, 55,000 of whom in Britain and Ireland. As a Christian charity, we aim to demonstrate faith in action through the transformation of communities worldwide. Our members work at grassroots level around the world bringing hope and practical support to at least a million people every year through our programmes and as part of the volunteer base of local churches.

The Fundraising & Communications Team & Role Purpose

The Fundraising & Communications Team is responsible for fundraising for the charitable work of Mothers’ Union and for communicating our work internally and externally in various formats and media platforms, resourcing dioceses and building membership. It has two areas of responsibility:

  • Fundraising – community, individual giving and trusts and statutory funding.
  • Communications – print and social media.

The Communications Officer will support the Head of Fundraising and Communications to deliver clear and consistent communications that will raise awareness, drive membership growth and facilitate fundraising across the Mothers’ Union movement. Faith is at the core of all that Mothers’ Union does. The post holder will be contribute to our faith discussions, write and review faith based resources. For this reason the post holder must be comfortable operating in a Christian environment.



  1. Proactively create and deliver high quality, inspiring multi-channel content (including, but not limited to, members magazine, email marketing, social media, campaigns and website) to engage key stakeholders and attract new followers to our cause.
  2. Co-ordinate the production of our bi-annual member’s magazine; leading editorial meetings, writing articles, conducting interviews, managing externals and overseeing timelines through to print and despatch
  3. Work with the Head of Fundraising and Communications to develop and disseminate briefings, and positioning statements.
  4. To refresh and oversee the maintenance of the organisation’s case study database working with colleagues to identify opportunities to cultivate new profiles in line with key messages and organisation priorities.
  5. Work in collaboration with colleagues in the Fundraising and Communications team to build and maintain a database of key statistics and latest research for use in communications and PR output.
  6. Work alongside the Communications and Digital Marketing Officer to ensure we are sharing compelling and quality content across the Movement.
  7. Increase the organisation’s profile through media engagement, monitor press coverage and identify news and parliamentary agendas which would benefit from the organisation’s perspective or commentary.
  8. Develop and enhance a strong network of media contacts and journalists, ensuring contacts are kept up-to date in a central database.
  9. Work alongside the Head of Fundraising and Communications to respond to requests from the press for comments, views and supporting information, and maximise opportunities for further engagement on relevant topics.
  10. In partnership with the Communications and Digital Marketing Officer develop an ongoing programme to engage and nurture High profile/celebrity supporters and influencers who can help raise our public profile through the on line and print media.
  11. Proactively seek opportunities and generate ideas and content to achieve positive national media coverage in print, online, and broadcast media.
  12. Measure and evaluate performance of media engagement, generating actionable reports which inform future activity and demonstrate impact to colleagues.


  1. Provide copywriting and editing support across all internal and external communications to maintain consistent tone, style and messaging across all outputs and act as a ‘brand guardian’ together with colleagues in the communications team.
  2. Refine and manage the charity’s content calendar.
  3. Take part in the charity’s out-of-office media enquiries and social media rota as required.
  4. Undertake any other duties as may reasonably be required by the employer.



  1. Knowledge of current communication and marketing trends in the voluntary sector.
  2. Knowledge of the faith sector in the UK (particularly the Anglican Communion).
  3. Knowledge of the contribution that faith and non-faith charities can have in achieving sustainable development goals.


  1. Excellent verbal and written skills in order to communicate with a wide range of audiences.
  2. Ability to proof read and edit clearly and accurately.
  3. Ability to take complex copy; and clearly and concisely identify and summarise key points allowing you to present a balanced argument.
  4. Excellent interpersonal skills, confident to engage and interview a wide range of stakeholders.
  5. Ability to set up systems and then monitor the impact of our communications work on and off line.
  6. Excellent time management skills and ability to respond quickly and accurately to deadlines.
  7. Developing a pool of high profile/celebrity supporters to support both communications and fundraising activity.
  8. Highly developed project management skills with a strong attention to detail and deadlines.


  1. At least 2 years’ experience of planning and delivering a range of communication activities including, but not limited to, publications, campaigns and digital media initiatives.
  2. Demonstrable experience of working with and writing for digital media platforms.
  3. Creating a database and network of key journalists and influencers that reaches outside the existing charities pool of influence.
  4. Experience in managing communications contractors to deliver high quality publications to fixed deadlines.


  1. Educated to degree level and/or equivalent experience in Communications, Digital marketing, media or journalism.
