Job description

Position title: The Open Kitchen (OK) National Coordinator

Reports to: Head of UK Programmes

Location: Muslim Hands, 148 – 164 Gregory Boulevard, Gregory House, Nottingham, NG7 5JE

Hours of Work: Full-time, 35 hours per week

Salary guideline:  (Up to) £28,000.00 per annum (commensurate with experience)

Terms of Employment: Permanent Contract (with a 6-Month Probationary Period)

Main purpose of the Role:

The Open Kitchen (OK) National coordinator is responsible for Open Kitchen programmes program in adherence with MH and donor guidelines and standards. The OK National coordinator is to streamline all OK projects within Project Management tools and Programme Quality with a focus on creating maximum impact.

The OK National coordinator is also responsible for building the capacity and management of the OK coordinators based at each of the Open Kitchens. The OK National coordinator will report to Head of UK programmes.

Main responsibilities

  • Programme Management
    • Coordinate and lead on the full programmatic cycle on OK programme
    • Develop and design OK programme and projects in line with OK models
    • Plan in liaison with the partners and OK coordinators for programme implementation
    • Coordinate the Implementation of the programme
    • Carry out full project cycle monitoring and impact evaluations of OK Programmes
    • Ensure the effective use of the internal programme management system (P3)
    • Support the OK coordinators through logistical support and advice.
  • Documents and templates
    • Ensure OK programme are in line with MH procedures and policy and follow the correct documentation and templates
    • Develop OK targeted documents and templates
    • Ensure all documents are properly communicated (internally) and are appropriately recorded
  • Networking and Coordination
    • Lead on the networking with local and national stakeholders on food poverty
    • Coordinate with local authorities to ensure the effective implementation of the OK programme
    • Represent MH and the OK programme at forums to ensure visibility of the programme within the sector
  • Provide all stakeholders with technical advice and support on UK food poverty issues
  • Ensure other areas of MH are in line with current UK food Security trends
  • Ensure all OK programmes are in line with due diligence, risk and legal concerns
  • Liaise with fundraising to address fundraising needs within the area of OK
  • Act as a focal point for information on the OK Programme
  • Finance
    • Develop programmatic expenditure budgets
    • Oversee the effective use of funds within a timely manner
    • Ensure documents and relevant procedures are followed to allow for a timely transfer of funds and are effectively transferred to partner offices
  • Liaise with relevant stakeholders within fundraising to ensure FSL programmes are funded and communicated to Donors
  • Programme Strategy and Reviews
    • Develop a strategy at for national OK programme  
    • Carry out an annual review
  • To undertake all tasks and duties in an effective, efficient, transparent and wholly accountable manner
  • To undertake any reasonable responsibilities as required by line manager
  • To promote and adhere to all Muslim Hands policies and codes of conduct

Person Specification


  • Experience of managing UK CSO Projects
  • Passionate about tackling poverty, deprivation and injustice and wanting to contribute actively to helping those in need or who are marginalised.
  • Self-motivated and energetic, with an ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Good organisational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Confident IT skills including email, internet use, Word and Excel
  • Ability to demonstrate current eligibility to work within the United Kingdom
  • Must be able to either:
  • Provide a valid Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) certificate (issued within the last year) when requested by Muslim Hands; OR
  • Undertake to provide full cooperation for Muslim Hands to perform a DBS Check at the required level appropriate for this / similar role.


  • Experience of working with food poverty interventions within the UK
  • Understanding of the food poverty Sector
  • An awareness of an interest in the current social/political issues that may affect the work of the Foodbank and its customers
  • Public speaking skills
