Job description

Mustard Tree aims to combat poverty and create life transforming opportunities for people who are homeless, or are at risk of becoming homeless.

Role Purpose
Working directly to the CEO, leading the services functions within Mustard Tree. This includes managing the Crisis provision, Freedom team and voucher schemes including Food Club. Represent the values of the charity both internally and externally, contributing to the Management team and overall development of the charity.

What you will be doing: Job Description

Referrals and Partnerships

  • Develop an understanding of beneficiary numbers and needs and reflect these in the support services provided by the Mustard Tree through an integrated approach

  • Manage referrals from incoming agencies including job centres, GPs, social care, work programme, mental health, drug and alcohol teams, churches

  • Build relationships with external statutory and 3rd sector agencies to encourage referrals and signposting

Managing Services

  • Manage the ‘Welcome’ function of the charity including reception and enquiries in line with our values and for all volunteers, guests and partners

  • Manage the crisis provision within the charity for rough sleepers, asylum seekers and people in need including 121 support, help with finding emergency accommodation, action planning, provision of food and clothing and referrals to other agencies

  • Manage the voucher plus schemes within the Mustard Tree including people on benefits, new tenancies and evaluate how we can best support people on low/minimum wage including decisions on gifting

  • Manage the Freedom support team including referrals, assessments, 121s, safeguarding, incident management, work placements, Next Steps planning and exit strategies

  • Work to budgets and manage day to day finances including petty cash, Freedom Volunteer expenses and the Freedom crisis fund.

Development of People

  • Line manage all Freedom and support services staff, ensuring they are appropriately trained in order to carry out their duties within the charity

  • Manage the Freedom team to support the Freedom trainees in the realisation of personal progression goals including induction and training.

  • Maintain positive relationships with other Mustard Tree managers and providing occasional cover if required

Reporting and Outcomes

  • Promote Mustard Tree values and develop suggestion boxes, monthly service user meetings and proactively communicate updates to the rest of Mustard Tree.
  • Provide outcome monitoring for all Freedom trainees, Crisis provision, Voucher plus schemes, Reception, Helpdesk and other services as required using our database and reporting mechanisms.

  • Work with the fundraising team and CEO to embed new services provision in line with funding received and provide tailored contract reporting information

Health and Safety

  • Fulfil role of Safeguarding Officer (along with CEO and other managers) and provide guidance for the rest of the charity

  • Manage the health and safety requirements of the support services including risk assessments, lone working policy, staff wellbeing and incident management

  • Manage an effective signing in and out process and weekly rota for trainees

General Work duties:

  • Support Freedom trainees to develop skills and behaviours and feel part of the community

  • Work within health & safety guidelines and Mustard Tree policies and procedures

  • Supporting other staff and departments and provide practical relief cover for work-streams

  • Take responsibility for professional development, attending training courses as required

  • Leading by example, embodying Mustard Tree values and represent the charity as required

  • Contribute towards being an environmentally responsible organisation as part of day to day activities

    including recycling and supporting ‘paper-lite’ practices

  • Other tasks and duties relevant to the role as required by the organisation

What we are looking for: Person Specification


1. Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in front line roles within 3rd sector/charity or similar

2. Experience of delivering a person-centred approach when supporting people with welfare issues

3. Ability to build relationships, develop external partnerships and represent an organisation positively

4. Good verbal and written communication skills including presentation and report writing

5. IT literacy including Microsoft word and excel and good administration skills

6. Knowledge of health and safety regulations, safeguarding, incident management and governance


7. Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a management role

8. Experience of working with and managing volunteers

9. Social Care / Community / business Level 3 qualification or a university level degree
