National Voices is the leading coalition of health and care charities in England. We work together to strengthen the voice of patients, service users, carers, their families and the voluntary organisations that work for them. We have more than 160 members covering a diverse range of health conditions and communities, connecting us with the experiences of millions of people.
We do this by influencing policy, improving practice, and acting as a voice for voluntary organisations. We are well-respected, influential, and have a reputation for punching above our weight.
Over the last 12 months we have restructured our team, developed a new business model and redesigned our strategy. Our goal is to close up the gap between policymakers and the people whose lives their decisions affect. This means we need to work more closely than ever with our members and the people they work with and for. We see it as part of our role to facilitate and strengthen action by people who use health and care services – advocating for better quality care for themselves and others.
Our new strategic focus means we now work through high profile partnerships and projects and we need to develop bespoke and overarching communications plans that explain our purpose and activities to a range of audiences. Good communication, with members, partners and stakeholders, is key to our success and we want to strengthen our capacity, which is why we are creating this new role.

The role of Communications Manager sits at the heart of the new National Voices team.
As our Communications Manager you will oversee and shape the organisation’s communications channels across social media, email campaigns, webinars (and when it is possible, physical events). Using these existing channels, and by introducing others if they are needed, you will ensure our members are aware of and engaged with our collaborative projects. Additionally, looking beyond our membership, you will devise communications strategies and plans to ensure the research and insight developed through our projects are noticed by the right people. These audiences could include health policy experts, decision-makers within the health and care system, government and parliamentarians, and users of health services among the general public.

You will already be a comms all-rounder with excellent editorial skills, happy to work across the comms mix. We don’t expect you to be an expert in every facet of communications yet, but this role will enable you to develop further whilst owning and driving forward the organisation’s communications function.
The role reports to our Head of Membership and Engagement and you will also work closely with our CEO and Head of Policy. You will have line management responsibility for junior staff as well as managing a mix of specialist agency and consultant support. You will also work with communications and policy colleagues from our diverse members and partners, who span the health and care sector.
