Job Description

We are looking for a new Communications Officer. It is an exciting and varied role, perfect for well-organised, technology-savvy and confident communicator. Candidates will need to be able to work independently, balancing a wide variety of tasks and deadlines. While charity sector experience is desirable, this role is also open to individuals who can demonstrate a strong track record of achievement and are passionate about making a difference. We are a tiny team of three people and everyday new challenges arise meaning you will need to be able to think on your feet and contribute to an array of tasks outside of your main responsibilities.

The Charity       

Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation (nsif) is devoted solely to research into treatment for spinal cord injury. It was set up by David Nicholls after his son Daniel was paralysed from the neck down after diving into a wave on Bondi Beach aged just 18. At nsif we fund pioneering research into a biological treatment for spinal cord injury.


Salary: £24,500

Application deadline: 1st February 2019 (interviews 6th – 13th February)

Location: Central London (at least 2 days a week) and homeworking

Hours: 9am - 5.30pm (37.5 hours per week, with occasional evenings and weekends)

Main Responsibilities

  • Update and maintain the nsif website with blogs, events and supporter profiles.
  • Applications to Trusts and Foundations for their financial support.
  • Keep the database up to date with supporter records.
  • Ensure data held is compliant with GDPR regulations.
  • Assisting with the organisation, marketing and PR of fundraising events with a set timeframe, including the annual Golf Event, Polo Day and several other smaller events.
  • Co-ordinating volunteers for community fundraising activities such as The Big Half Marathon and Prudential Ride London.
  • Maintain relationships with key donors, corporates and community fundraisers.
  • Ensure fundraisers are supported and made to feel valued throughout their fundraising journey.
  • Explore new fundraising & event opportunities from conception through to completion.
  • Update and create social media posts and campaigns. 
  • Ensure compliance with the Fundraising Code of Practice.
  • Produce the nsif quarterly newsletter. 
  • Produce any mailouts and correspondence to supporters.
  • Assist with feedback and periodic reports to trustees and other stakeholders.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • An ideas person who is always looking for new opportunities and ways to improve existing practices.
  • Highly organised and able to balance a busy workload.
  • Confident in the ability to work independently.
  • The flexibility to work outside of normal office hours from time-to-time.
  • Eligible to work in the UK.

Essential Qualifications

  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills. 
  • Experience using social media and building a presence online.
  • A degree or equivalent qualification, or substantial relevant experience that demonstrates high-order literacy, numeracy and analytical skills.
  • Experience co-ordinating groups of people in an events/ project context.


  • Able to create simple but effective graphic designs – preferably on Canva.
  • Proficiency WordPress.
  • Proficiency with Mailchimp.
  • Knowledge of Google Analytics/ Google AdWords.
  • Interest in science, technology and innovation.
