About the Role

Humanists International has another separate entity based in the US. This role will be a part of the UK operations team but will collaborate with the US finance team occasionally when it’s required, for example, during the audit period. Both UK and US finance teams are managed by the same Director of Finance and Operations who is based in London. 

We are looking for a highly motivated individual who can provide excellent finance and administrative support to the small, predominantly home-based team. We’re seeking someone who is personable, highly organised, has attention to detail and is keen to take initiative and learn new skills. Onboarding training will be provided, but we would like you to demonstrate transferable skills. 

You will work on a wide variety of tasks which will include bookkeeping and bank reconciliations, being the first point of contact for the organisation, as well as providing general administrative support to the team. You will be comfortable working both independently and collaboratively across a diverse international team.

This is a full-time or part-time with a minimum of 4 days/week (0.8 FTE), permanent position, which is predominantly home-based but does require the attendance of in-person events such as the General Assembly and Team Building. You will also be expected to attend a number of board-level meetings held on weekends to take meeting minutes - further details are listed in the Key Responsibilities section.

Key Responsibilities

• Taking charge of the day-to-day financial activities and office administration of the organisation.

• Ensuring high-accuracy bookkeeping and bank reconciliation are completed to deadlines. 

• Ensuring adequate financial documents are filed on Drive to comply with the audit requirements.

• Preparing invoices and receipts to stakeholders as required.

• Generating month-end Budget vs. Actual Report from accounting software on time, for the Director of Finance and Operations to review. 

• Preparing financial data for quarterly Finance Report in tables for the Director of Finance and Operations to conduct quarterly financial analysis.

• Assisting the Director of Finance and Operations with the preparation of financial data, tables and files for the annual budgeting and UK audit.

• Reviewing and processing expense claims. And ensuring the Expenses Policy is being followed. 

• Preparing and attaching expense receipts to the CEO’s monthly credit card statements.

• Being the first point of contact of the organisation. Managing office inbox, answering office calls and sorting out the letters.

• Attending online board meetings (four times a year on Saturdays) and investment committee meetings (twice a year on weekdays between 5-7pm) to take meeting minutes. Board meetings normally take 3 hours and investment committee meetings take 45 minutes. These meetings are usually planned 6-8 months in advance.  TOILs will be provided when the meeting is held outside your normal working hours.

• Assisting the CEO with board papers and circulating them to board members before board meetings.

• Arranging flights and accommodations for the CEO and board members to attend in-person meetings when required.

• Arranging meetings for the CEO when required.

• Assisting staff and board members with queries on finance or administrative matters.

• Any other appropriate duties.

Essential Skills

• Accounting, finance, or economics qualification.

• A minimum of two years’ experience in bookkeeping and administration roles. 

• Experience using financial software. e.g. Quickbooks, Xero, Sage or equivalent.

• Understanding of the chart of accounts structure, cash/accrual accounting basis.

• Understanding of the expense claim process.

• Experience preparing the budget. (Not necessarily the whole organisation’s budget, but specific section(s), for example, travel costs and fixed-costs related budget lines would be essential.)

• Excellent organisation, time management and multi-tasking skills with the ability to prioritise and plan a busy workload. 

• Self-motivated and able to meet all deadlines.

• Supportive, collaborative and able to build relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.

• Abilities to work independently with initiative.

The successful applicant will line-managed by and work closely with the Head of Practice Management (HoPM). It is essential though that they are self-motivated and can work independently.

Key tasks

• To establish and maintain a communications strategy and plan for Chambers, utilising the latest in digital communication methods.
• To manage the promotional activities of Chambers, its Practice Teams, and individual members, by managing and developing:
  • Its website and social media,
  • Webinars, podcasts and other digital training methods, 
  • In-person training and promotional events.
• To assist the HoPM by promoting Chambers to professional clients.
• To manage the promotion of Chambers via the media.
• To manage and promote engagement with legal associations, charities and NGOs to further the ethos and business of Chambers.

The above tasks will include:

• Identifying newsworthy cases and issues upon which Chambers may wish to engage, including through liaising closely with members of Chambers and the Practice Management Team (PMgT) to identify notable cases and issues upon which we may wish to engage.
• Working under the direction of the HoPM to assist in the practice development of individual members.
• Engaging barrister members and pupils to produce high quality training and promotional material for the website and social media, including content production such as webinars, podcasts and vlogs.
• Ensuring the website is:
  • Accessible, attractive, interesting and as useful as possible to our professional and lay clients,
  • Optimised to achieve top search engine ranking,
  • Up to date, with members’ pages regularly reviewed, and news items frequently added,
  • A source of training materials and information relating to our work and ethos, including webinars, vlogs, blogs and ‘how to’ guides.
• Ensuring a variety of social media platforms are utilised to optimise the footprint of Chambers, and to promote news about Chambers’ cases and other activities as quickly, professionally and as widely as possible.
• Identifying potential new clients to the PMgT and assisting them in the promotion of Chambers.
• Maintaining and developing professional client contact lists, mailing lists and databases, in conjunction with the Practice Teams and PMgT.
• Coordinating, advertising and managing training and promotional events in conjunction with Practice Teams and the PMgT.  This to include maximising outcomes from events.
• Liaising with outside bodies, including legal associations, charities and NGOs to promote the engagement of members of Chambers and the standing of Chambers as a whole.
• Managing the use of Chambers seminar facilities for ethos-compatible third-party events.
• In conjunction with the HoPM and individual members, coordinating and drafting submissions to legal directories.
• Developing and maintaining effective relationships with journalists, media outlets and prominent actors in the human rights field to optimise the exposure of members and Chambers as a whole.

• Assisting with the production of Chambers promotional material, including sophisticated marketing materials by utilising the latest advertising platforms optimised for social media.

Person Specification

The individual will have:

• A clear understanding and commitment to the ethos of Chambers.

The successful applicant will be confident and articulate, and may have relevant experience in the NGO, international organisation, development or charity sector.  A general understanding of the way the legal profession is organised and works will be helpful but not essential.

Global Digital Fundraising and Engagement Officer

Location: Manchester

The Director of Operations will work as part of the management team to develop and implement the organisation’s strategy and operational plans and to build the longer term sustainability of the organisation. They will be required to deputise for the Chief Officer in their absence and assist in the overall management of the organisation. The role also involves working with the Chief Officer to design and improve our monitoring, evaluation and learning across the organisation in line with our new strategy.

Strong communication, negotiation, and analytical capabilities are vital, alongside a talent for fostering inter-departmental collaboration and remote work coordination.

*We are currently recruiting for a Global Procurement and Logistics Advisor. This is a permanent position which has been classified as ‘roving’. The Project Officer will support Hamrah’s mission by streamlining and strengthening communication, coordination, and outreach among stakeholders, including the partner cohort, mentors, the board of advisors, team members and wider Afghan civil society. The role demands a proactive approach to keeping lines of communication open, addressing queries and concerns promptly, and identifying opportunities for collaboration. The Project Officer will also play a key role in supporting the effective and smooth implementation of project activities, and in ensuring that stakeholders remain actively engaged. This role requires excellent interpersonal, cultural competency and communication and outreach skills and thrives on teamwork, adaptability, and a keen ability to connect with external partners.

Job Description

Communication, Outreach, and Advocacy

• Streamline internal project communications with the partner cohort and other key stakeholders to enhance efficiency and clarity of messaging. 
• Support the design and implementation of communication strategies and advocacy tools, including developing advocacy campaigns and communication materials.
• Work with the partner cohort to identify key advocacy opportunities and relevant forums through which to promote the rights and needs of marginalised communities in Afghanistan.
• Work with partners to engage with policymakers, influencers, and advocacy networks to raise awareness of the project’s advocacy agenda and influence policy direction. 
• Create engaging and informative content for various communication channels, such as newsletters and blogs, highlighting the project’s impact and success stories. If needed, manage the project’s social media accounts, including maintaining an up-to-date project website, regularly posting updates, and engaging with the online community. 

Information Exchange and Knowledge Sharing

• Take an active part in coordination meetings to foster internal cohesion and build strong relationships with the partner cohort and other external stakeholders.
• Help to facilitate discussions, meetings, and conferences to support knowledge exchange and strategic planning with the partner cohort and other stakeholders.
• Support the smooth running of project events by providing logistical and administrative support, inviting participation, and overseeing the effective dissemination of learning and outcomes.

Capacity Building and Training

• Help to plan and organise capacity-building sessions, specialised workshops, and meetings, to facilitate knowledge exchange and skill development.
• Support the development of training materials that meet the specific needs of our partner cohort and their communities.
• Design and deliver targeted training sessions on communication, outreach, and policy advocacy, enriching the skill sets of our partners.
• Offer expert advice to our partners, sharing best practices and insights on communication strategies, advocacy efforts, and effective reporting.

Person specification

Hamrah comprises a small and dedicated remote team. The person who fills this post should feel comfortable working independently in a remote setting and accepting a high level of responsibility for the project’s success. Candidates with lived experience of any of the issues related to the role are strongly encouraged to apply.

We are looking for someone with the following skills and experience:

Required

• A passion for social impact, with a particular focus on supporting marginalised communities.
• Demonstrated relevant work experience and proven track record of achievement in the field of organisational development and capacity building, preferably in the Global South.
• Proven experience in communication, project coordination and external outreach, ideally within a diverse and dynamic environment.
• Strong cultural competency, interpersonal and organisational skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a diverse team and with a range of external partners
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, both in English and in Afghanistan’s local languages.
• A “self-starter” able to work independently as well as collaboratively in carrying out responsibilities, with the ability and energy to multi-task and manage a dynamic work environment.

Desirable

• Experience working with Afghan CSOs and a good understanding of their dynamics is highly desirable.
• Proficiencies in Afghanistan’s local languages is highly desirable

For over 35 years Ethical Consumer (ECRA) has been the hub of the ethical consumer movement, helping consumers to shop ethically, campaigners to challenge corporate power and businesses to improve their supply chains. The role of the board is to help ECRA to meet its long term goals and to move its social purpose forward. 

Board members meet quarterly to assess and advise on the progress that ECRA is making. Meetings normally last two hours. We also hold an annual strategy session to address issues chosen by the board. Board members may attend these meetings by zoom or in person (in Manchester) at their convenience. Travel expenses can be paid. Board members are paid £125 for each meeting attended during the year.

Board members may also be asked for opinions or for decisions by email in between meetings. Occasionally a special call to address a particular issue may be necessary too.

Members of our Board act as company directors. They are responsible for overall good governance of Ethical Consumer in accordance with the provisions of relevant legislation and guidance.

Salary: £34,834 starting salary (salary range will increase to a max £37,336 via the length of service) per annum pro rata plus £4,087.65 Inner London Weighting if based in London per annum pro rata. 

Contract: Permanent basis

Hours: Full-time. 35 hours per week (excluding lunch breaks). Some evening and weekend work may be required for which time off in lieu should be claimed.

Location: Any Refugee Action Office: London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bradford.  We will consider UK-based hybrid working option. (Some travel in the UK with occasional overnight stays away from home may be required).

About the post 

This exciting role would mean joining Refugee Action at a crucial point in the charity’s 40-year history, full of opportunity and potential. You will use your creative skills to support the creation of innovative digital content to engage and mobilise existing supporters and add to Refugee Action’s rapidly growing audience. Working between the fundraising and campaigns team, this role will support the Digital Communications Manager to deliver our ambitious digital strategy, focusing on the development of engaging digital content, the management of one of our key supporter databases, and will lead on the engagement and retention work which supports Refugee Action’s fundraising and campaigning.

We are looking for candidates that can demonstrate:

• Commitment to removing barriers to power for people with lived experience, and commitment to anti-racist practices.
• Understanding of how the UK’s hostile refugee protection and asylum system impacts those affected by it.
• Passion and motivation to raise vital funds to support refugees and people seeking asylum in the UK.
• Strong understanding of how campaigning can achieve change and shift power.
• Strong understanding of the role of digital tactics in the development and execution of campaign strategies.
• Strong writing, editing and proof-reading skills, with experience of using these within a fast-paced environment and adapting content for difference audiences.
• Experience of maintaining and nurturing social media communities and creating impactful digital content.
• Desirable: knowledge of Facebook advertising, including the set-up, management and analysis of ad performance.
• Experience using Adobe creative software – particularly InDesign and Premiere.
• Experience of using Engaging Networks or similar system or proven ability to learn new systems quickly.
• Experience working with website content management systems.
• Experience of using Google AdWords, and of using reporting and analytics tools, such as Google Analytics.
• Understanding of the digital landscape, and emerging trends in web and social technology and digital fundraising.

Key tasks and responsibilities:

• You will manage and grow Stronger Together’s business relations in a variety of sectors, both in the UK and globally to generate funding and drive impact. This includes taking the lead in developing project proposals for clients.

• You will deliver interactive training workshops and deliver premium quality services to businesses to support them to embed responsible recruitment and fair work and tackle modern slavery in their operations and supply chains.

• You will project manage all client projects from start to finish.

The role is diverse with opportunities to generate new funding to drive impact, project manage and implement training and activity with a variety of businesses, and to try out new ideas. You will work remotely, but in close cooperation with the Head of Business Development, and rest of our growing team across the world. 

Who you are:

• An experienced professional with an in-depth understanding of and subject matter expertise on working with businesses on responsible recruitment, ethical labour practices and modern slavery, and significant experience in business engagement/developing and managing senior management corporate sponsor relations (min. 5 years’ experience).

• The ideal candidate should have experience in a business development role, a track record in building and developing business relations, and strong experience of giving presentations, delivering pitches and closing deals.

• Experienced in maintaining and developing corporate sponsor relations including writing client and grant proposals.

• An excellent trainer, with experience of delivering training to businesses.

• A strong project manager and great organiser, with the ability to set and meet demanding targets and deadlines, and to hold others accountable to those.

• A professional who has worked with or within the construction, manufacturing, consumer goods, apparel, finance or care sector on responsible business behaviour.

• An excellent communicator, both verbally and in writing, with experience of developing and building new successful working relationships with a range of stakeholders, as well as confidence in representing the organisation professionally at a variety of events.

• A motivated and enthusiastic worker, able to work independently and with remote colleagues/stakeholders.

• Someone with a good eye for detail, whilst retaining sight of the bigger picture.
