SOS-UK is looking for 13 months of maternity cover for a Senior Project Manager to join our team to co-lead on our Food and Farming sustainability-focused work.
This role focuses on leading and managing our Food and Farming work streams to ensure they remain impactful, successful and that they are delivered to a high standard. Over the course of the maternity cover the successful candidate will be focusing on the joint delivery of our Farming for Carbon and Nature (FCN) programme. FCN works within the higher and further education sector and aims to set up an innovative model where universities make payments to farms so they can transition to more nature friendly farming practices to sequester carbon and improve biodiversity, helping the university to reach their targets in these areas. Students are involved in the programme through annual soil sampling and testing for carbon, and through biodiversity surveys. Later in the programme we also hope to be exploring the nutrient density of food produced, meeting the triple challenges of the climate, nature and health
crises we face.
Senior Project Manager Responsibilities:
• To deliver, develop and successfully manage Food and Farming work streams.
• Deliver externally grant funded projects, ensuring that they are delivered to high standards, meeting and exceeding the expectations of any funders.
• Secure income for food and farming related projects with support from the Director of Engagement.
Senior Project Manager Requirements:
The successful candidate will also lead on our newly acquired funding from the Environment Agency as part of their Natural Environment Investment Readiness Fund. Therefore particular emphasis for this role will be on the exploration of an investment model for FCN, including leading on verification or certification for the sale of carbon and biodiversity, and working with external experts to determine a viable business model post pilot.
The role will also support other aspects of FCN, such as the biodiversity working group, the farmers’ working group and the soil working group, as well as general coordination of the project. As such, knowledge of UK food and farming and an understanding of financial systems (ideally around carbon markets and payments for ecosystem services) will be essential.
SOS-UK is an education charity focusing on sustainability, launched by the student movement in October 2019. SOS-UK supports students and wider society to learn, act and lead for environmental justice.
SOS-UK works across all forms of education and through our work we aim to:
• Get more students leading on, and learning for, sustainability.
• Repurpose the education system around the climate emergency and ecological crises.
• Make sustainability more inclusive, so it is for everyone.
We believe that when students lead on sustainability, they learn about it, picking up the vital knowledge, skills and competencies they will need to help transform society into a more just and sustainable place.
