Job description

The Head of Voluntary Fundraising and Communications will be responsible for developing and implementing the global voluntary funding and communications strategy.

The job holder will oversee ambitious and dedicated voluntary funding and communication staff to provide the necessary vision, leadership, oversight, coordination and priority setting, and fundraising and communication skills to sustain and expand the organisation’s voluntary funding targets, increase visibility, and develop Ol Pejeta’s profile for a clear case for support for the organisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, execution and monitoring of the global voluntary funding strategy to deliver income growth, particularly unrestricted income

  • Strategic leadership, oversight and support implementation of the individual giving programmes including major donors and legacies

  • Business development and innovation to ensure sustainable and diverse portfolio in voluntary funding

  • Lead and oversee the development and delivery of Ol Pejeta’s supporter acquisition and stewardship programs

  • Lead the development and execution of the global communications strategy with particular aim to raise our profile and awareness globally, support its campaigning and fundraising

  • Lead and oversee the organizational brand and manage reputational risk

  • Garner and manage a host of influencers

  • Support development and management of the Global Ambassador and Patron Programme(s)

  • Ensure the development of and embed systems, policies, processes within the teams, and as relevant across the organization that are necessary to ensure that the organisation works to the highest standards for voluntary funding and communications

  • Data analysis and performance reporting to ensure data driven decision making

  • Coordinate and provide oversight of the strategic direction for fundraising trends and their implications for the organisation


The post holder must demonstrate:

  • Track record of success in fundraising from individual, and family trusts and foundations. He/she must be able to identify, solicit, engage and steward current and new donors to meet or exceed growth oriented fundraising targets.

  • Excellent written & verbal skills in English, great attention to detail and commitment to high standards is required.

Professional Qualifications

  • Relevant experience in organizational communications and voluntary funding required

  • A successful track record of stewarding and securing gifts from high net worth individuals

  • Substantial experience and expertise in all communications disciplines including media relations, social media and digital strategy, multimedia, reputation and brand management

  • Strong experience in delivery high quality design work and using design tools such as in-design

  • Excellent written, verbal, and organizational skills

  • Very strong attention to detail

  • Experience with Salesforce or other CRM required

  • Knowledge of conservation/international development issues is preferred

  • A general-to-good understanding of the Kenyan/African social-political context is essential.

  • Experience in Kenya, East Africa and or other parts of Africa is desirable

Education and Training

  • Relevant University degree required

  • Relevant experience in similar role at a conservation or sustainable development NGO in an international setting

  • Skilled in Microsoft Office and use of a CRM database
