Job description

 

PAPYRUS is the national UK charity dedicated to preventing young suicide.

  1. DESIGNATION                          Media Manager
  2. HOURS                                           36 per week (some planned unsocial hours)
  3. SALARY                                    NJC Scale 27-30 (£30,507 - £32,878) & 5% pension contribution 
                                                                        (plus 17.5% London weighting if applicant is London-based)
  4. LOCATION                                 Warrington or London with travel across the UK

  7. PURPOSE OF POST      
    1. To optimise our engagement with print and broadcast media.
    2. To monitor UK print and broadcast media in the UK to ensure sensitive reporting in line with IPSO and Ofcom guidance.
  8. KEY RELATIONSHIPS        Head of Marketing and Communications and Team; PAPYRUS Trustees, Chief Executive, Staff, Volunteers and Supporters.
  9. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    1. Execute planned, targeted press and broadcast media communications programme with strong news elements that reach and influence target audiences.
    2. Provide advice and guidance to Senior Management, Trustees and other stakeholders in matters relating to external print and broadcast media.
    3. Support Head of Marketing and Communications with
      1. reputation management
      2. crisis communications
    4. Develop and maintain our relationships with national and regional media professionals.
    5. Create national and regional press communications to support all activity bases of the charity.
    6. Promote and monitor sensitive, accurate reporting of suicide by all media sectors, including drama and documentary programme-makers, in line with IPSO and Ofcom guidelines. Further the charity’s relationship with both and similar bodies.
    7. Build a strong relationship with Head of Marketing to ensure maximum exposure and impact of marketing campaigns through targeted press and broadcast media.
    8. Monitor and regularly review and report on Press Office achievement against objectives agreed by the Head of Marketing and Communications.
    9. Monitor media coverage and report findings regularly to Head of Marketing and Communications.
    10. Ensure all media and press relations activity is well co-ordinated to deliver maximum impact.
    11. Ensure maximum availability to respond to journalist and programme makers’ requests through a ‘duty press officer’ schedule.
    12. Be available and contribute proactively, often a short notice, in responding to breaking news.
    13. Contribute to internal communications in relation to press office activity.
    14. Be prepared to travel to PAPYRUS regional offices and other venues as required and be prepared for ‘unsocial’ hours and overnight stays as deemed necessary.
    15. Keep on top of developing news relevant to the trends and behaviours of young people, the nation’s attitude to suicide and mental health and be prepared to react swiftly to support the Senior Management Team and other colleagues with guidance on response messages. Contribute ideas to strategic campaigns.
    16. Provide media guidance to families, schools and other relevant bodies affected by young suicide to help leverage accurate, sensitive reporting following a suicide and at events such as inquests.
    17. Line manage any future staff and volunteers within the Press Office.

 

  1. OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
    1. Work closely with the Head of Marketing and Communications to contribute as required to the advice and information PAPYRUS provides on its website, social media channels and literature for various stakeholders.
    2. Respect confidentiality within policy and manage information as per the Data Protection legislation and General Data Protection Regulations
    3. Understand duties and manage any matters relating to safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults within PAPYRUS policy and in line with safeguarding legislation and agreed protocols.
    4. Attend and contribute constructively to line management supervision and appraisal protocols.
    5. Attend training courses and develop agreed professional development plans within the scope of the post.

 

  1. ADDITIONAL DUTIES                 It is the nature of the work of PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide that tasks and responsibilities are in many circumstances, unpredictable and varied. All staff are, therefore, expected to work in a flexible way when the occasion arises and when tasks not specifically covered in their job description have to be undertaken. These additional duties will normally be to cover unforeseen circumstances or changes in work and they will normally be compatible with the regular type of work. If the additional responsibility or task becomes a regular or frequent part of the job, it will be included in the job description in consultation with the member of staff.

 

  1. CONFIDENTIALITY                     It is expected that all PAPYRUS employees understand that our work is confidential and that neither details about those who use its services nor any other PAPYRUS business should be divulged to members of the public. A confidentiality agreement must be signed on taking up this post. Further details are outlined in the PAPYRUS Confidentiality Policy.

 

  1. BASIC PRINCIPLES                     The post holder is expected to be familiar with and have regard to the ethos and values of PAPYRUS and work within that framework. He/she must be prepared to operate without prejudice to all who approach PAPYRUS or work with the organisation at any level.

 

  1. CONDITIONS OF SERVICE          Conditions of Service are broadly in line with those set out by the National Joint Council for Local Government Services. PAPYRUS has a probationary period of 6 months for all posts. Appointment to this post may be subject to satisfactory completion of Vetting and Barring Scheme checks.
