Peace Direct is an international charity with a big mission: to work with local people to stop violence and build sustainable peace in some of the world's most conflict affected countries. More than that, we want to change the international system so that it better supports the role that local people and communities play in preventing violence and building and sustaining peace.
As Senior Programme Officer, you will be part of the Programmes and Research team where you will be responsible for supporting our local partners in the Great Lakes and Central Africa regions. The peacebuilding programmes that we support in this vast area range from youth-led peacebuilding efforts in Central Africa Republic, rescuing and rehabilitating child soldiers and establishing local justice mechanisms in DR Congo to strengthening civil society peacebuilding networks in Burundi. Our local partners are working under the most difficult conditions and your job is to provide the best possible support to them, through helping them think through learning frameworks, leading on various aspects of grant management and reporting, exploring ways to strengthen financial sustainability, supporting new programme development, and solving problems together as they arise.
The successful candidate will have a minimum of four years’ experience in a similar or relevant role, and experience of working with local partners in developing countries on multi-year programmes funded by institutional donors. The role requires excellent communication skills, written and verbal, and the successful candidate must be fluent in French. Managing complex programmes requires excellent organisational skills and very strong financial literacy skills as we expect the successful candidate to be very comfortable in handling complex spreadsheets and reviewing financial reports from partners. We are also looking for someone who is creative, calm and adaptable even under the most challenging of circumstances. The work we support around the world is based in some of the most volatile contexts, and things often don't go according to plan. We are looking for people who thrive under these situations.

We have no overseas offices, employ no expatriate staff and we are looking for people who see this as our strength, as everything we do is designed to strengthen the role of local people's efforts to stop violence and build sustainable peace.
While the post is based in our London office, we have closed our office due to Covid and do not expect to reopen it until June 2021. Therefore the successful candidate will be expected to work from home until June at the earliest. Please note that this is a fixed term contract, for 12 months.
