Job description

Pecan's Women's Service offer one-to-one advocacy to women who are exiting the criminal justice system, women at risk of entering the criminal justice system, and other women at multiple disadvantages with complex needs in the boroughs of Southwark and Lewisham. Our hub spaces provide a safe space for women in the boroughs, where they can make new social connections and build their confidance through our programmes of workshops.

The Women's Advocate role will enable women in Southwark and Lewisham to access trauma informed advocacy, support, advice and signposting services with a focus on mental health, finance and debt, housing, substance misuse and parenting. You will be co-located in the Women's Hub in Southwark and Lewisham, providing support to women in the community and those leaving custody, and assisting them to access wider-borough services.


Main Responsibilities:

  1. Provide advocacy, emotional and practical support to women referred to our services
  2. Be responsible for superivisng two drop-in sessions per week at our Pekcham hub; signposting women to other services, helping with ad-hoc practical matters and generally maintaining a safe space
  3. Use a variety of stategies to communicate effectively with service-users, prison and probation staff, external organisations and the general public
  4. Maintain accurate, confidential service-user records of interaction, interventions, and contact details


Essential Requirements:

  1. Thorough understanding of disadvantages specifically faced by women and strong commitment to achieving equality for women
  2. Excellent interpersonal skills including ability to sensitively manage issues arising with clients
  3. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines, with good attention to detail
  4. Ability to work unsupervised and to be self-motivated
