About us

Penny Appeal was set up in 2009 to provide poverty relief across Asia, the Middle East and Africa by offering water solutions, organising mass feedings, supporting orphan care, and providing emergency aid. We’ve come a long way since then and have grown tremendously in the past 11 years!

We’ve transformed lives and empowered communities, helping to break the poverty cycle and build brighter futures. Over the past few years, our work has expanded and our teams have grown considerably, allowing us to launch new campaigns and work in even more crisis-hit countries. As well as strengthening communities in over 30 countries around the world, we also make it a point to support vulnerable people here in the UK, too.

Each of our projects are carefully designed to be accessible and effective. They are a wonderful blend of emergency support, short-term relief, and longer-term sustainable solutions. About the role

We are seeking a talented and experienced copywriter with a creative flare of storytelling to share with the world the impact of our work.  Stories that will connect with people and build a community of supporters. You’ll be writing about how we provide lifesaving medical interventions in Syria, help feed Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, and provide emergency responses from bush fires in Australia to cyclones in Sub-Saharan Africa.  We’re also prioritising internal communications so there will also be a focus on bringing together our global staff body and helping them feel like one global team.  This would be for both online and offline channels, and you’d responsible for the content and quality of features within publications and articles.  Needless to say your style will need to be engaging, well written and in sync with wider organisational objectives.   

The Communications Team is brand new (we recently separated our comms and marketing functions to reflect our plans for growth), and you’ll have a key role in shaping is formation, development and dynamics. 

Key areas:

  • Editorial content creation for anywhere we have a need for communications input, including but not limited to email bulletins, website, social media, press releases, speeches, internal magazines
  • Overseeing the layout and appearance of content
  • Proof read and edit the work of team members
  • Proactively assist with idea generation, especially with one eye on promoting our brand, our fundraising calendar, and internal communications needs
  • Actively contribute and monitor content planning, ensuring effective linkages with the broader work of the organisation, key fundraising dates, and annual planning

  • Level 4 qualification or equivalent experience
  • Three years copy writer experience
  • Superb writing and editing skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Able to multi task and prioritise workload

  • Welcomes diversity


  • Knowledge of Islamic financial matters (Zakat, Wakf, Qurbani etc.)
  • International development, and/or writing for an organisation which fundraisers
