About the role
With our current Chair, Andy Start, approaching the end of his term this year, we now need to appoint a new Chair to join the Board in September 2020. The term of office is four years (subject to annual review) with potential to serve up to two terms.
The time commitment is based around five (three hour) board meetings starting at 17:15, plus a strategic away-day in January. In addition, the Chair is expected to be involved with the College, be visible and engage with staff and students, and attend events and meetings both internally and externally to represent the College. Overall, it is estimated that the Chair will be required to commit to up to six days per month.
As the Chair of the Governing Body, you will provide leadership to the College and oversee the delivery of our new Strategic Plan, working collaboratively with an engaged and committed Board of Governors and a high performing Leadership Team led by Simon Cook, Principal/Chief Executive Officer. You will be an experienced and strategic leader with strong chairing experience, who will be deeply committed to improving opportunities for students through education and training in our local communities.
We have outstanding financial health, so we are now in a position of strength to deliver against our new ten-year Strategic Plan – 2020-2030, which works towards our ambition to be ‘Outstanding’ and provide high-quality technical education and training, to equip our students with the skills and qualifications for the changing world of work, and to drive the ambitions and prosperity of the communities of Medway, Maidstone and surrounding areas.
As the College receives significant funding from its wholly owned subsidiary company, MKC Training Services, you will ensure they receive the appropriate level of support from the College and Governing Body to enable them to focus on diversifying their services and income, to safeguard and strengthen the financial return, and to enable the College to deliver on its strategic plan.
Who we're looking for
With a naturally strategic mindset, commercial experience of operating at a very senior level within a large and complex business environment and a passion and commitment to lifelong learning, you will lead a committed and diverse Board of Governors.
Whilst you may not have experience of further education, you will have a keen interest and appreciation to care about the impact that further education has on people and the social economic impact the College creates in the community. MidKent College provides life changing opportunities to people of all ages, so it is vital that the Chair recognises this and is willing and able to champion the work of the College in an ambassadorial role across the sector, the local community and wider stakeholder communities.
You will have an inclusive and collaborative style, to enable and foster open and honest discussion and debate around the Board table. You will have strong chairing skills at board level and will recognise the difference between executive and non-executive decision making. You will lead the appraisal of plans, presentations and ideas put forward by the CEO/Principal and Leadership Team, with the required level of challenge and respect.
With further education, and the education sector more broadly in a period of change, driven by digital technology, financial challenges, and an active policy agenda, it is important the College can change and adapt in response to Government policy. Therefore, the Chair will need to be decisive; recognising when to act independently and when to draw on the expertise around the Board, the Leadership Team and other peers within the sector. You will need to have the ability to recognise opportunities for the College and have the confidence and gravitas to champion the benefits that the College can offer the sector in retraining our local and national communities for the future.
