Job description

The Executive Director of Marketing and Communications will be a key member of the Air Ambulance Charity Kent Surrey Sussex (KSS) Senior Leadership Team (SLT), responsible for leading and developing our marketing and communication function and strategy to support the delivery of our strategic and cultural plan – The KSS Way.

This is a new role, introduced to elevate and maximise the impact of all our strategic marketing and communications activity. In the past few years we have strengthened our identity, both internally and externally, and your role will be to further embed our identity and marketing efforts as a cross-organisational function.

Working as part of the SLT, you will lead the effort to raise awareness and understanding of our work across our communities and beyond, with the aim of increasing intention to support and driving income, as well as further establishing our role as a sector leader.

You should be a proven marketing and communications expert, with proven experience in:

Leading teams

Managing income and expenditure budgets

Innovative, forward-thinking

Passion for identifying and creating sustainable opportunities

Managing ambiguity and leading through change

In addition, your analytical skills will ensure efforts are directed to those activities reaping the most impact and benefit.

You will also possess the people skills required to inspire colleagues, empower others, build strong bonds, and influence and inspire stakeholders.

We are looking for a deep understanding and passion for marketing and communications who understand the many different audiences of the charity.

Key areas of responsibility

Leadership and management duties:

Provide authentic, clear, and dynamic leadership to the Marketing and Communications Team to ensure a high-performing team, aligned to our values and culture

Support, coach, develop and inspire the Marketing and Communications Team to achieve critical success factors, holding the team accountable for results

Work as a key member of the SLT to inspire, support and motivate the broader team to achieve our purpose as an organisation

Strategic development and delivery:

Set the ambition and develop the strategy for marketing and communications which will elevate the prominence and value of marketing and communications to enable our growth and ensure we deliver on our strategic goals and objectives

Work in close and effective collaboration with the Individual Giving and Fundraising and Philanthropy Teams to support and augment our engagement with donors and prospective donors and maximise the impact of our individual giving, fundraising and philanthropic activities

Lead the development of the digital ecosystem (website, social channels, digital marketing tools, intranet, etc.) and turn digital into a source of value for KSS which supports individual giving, fundraising and philanthropic activities and the sharing and dissemination of our impact

Managing collaboration for mutual benefit:

Act as an ambassador for KSS, engaging with stakeholders in the community and beyond to build strong, strategic relationships to the benefit of KSS

Identify partnership opportunities that will enable the delivery of our strategy, and cultivate relationships to drive outcomes

Manage relationships with external partners and suppliers to drive performance and ensure effective delivery of outputs

Governance, monitoring, and reporting:

Underpin governance with well presented, timely reporting of statements and other relevant reports

Monitor best practice among close competitors and the HEMS and wider charity sector, to ensure that our approach to marketing and communications is coherent and delivering the required impact

Ensure the quality and robust measurement, monitoring and evaluation of all our communications and marketing activity including the development of key metrics to assess performance and progress, drive improvement
