Job title:                     Fundraising and Communications Officer


Salary:                        NCJ scale 22 - £29,722.00 (including London weighting) pro-rata


Hours:                                    21 hours per week


Term:                          Permanent


Probationary period: 6 months


Based:                        PAS’ offices, Farringdon


Reports to:                Head of Fundraising & Communications


Key relationships:    Director, Caseworkers, Office and Advice Line Manager, Fundraising & Communications Volunteers, External Stakeholders (Donors and Prospective Donors)


Job purpose

The Fundraising and Communications Officer will support the Head of Fundraising & Communications to promote the work of Prisoners’ Advice Service (PAS) to existing and potential trust, foundation and major donor funders, with a view to meeting annual fundraising targets.  


Key Responsibilities

  • To research and identify trusts, foundations and major donors likely to be interested in the work of PAS;
  • To maintain existing, and develop new, relationships with trusts, foundations and major donors;
  • To respond to enquiries from trusts, foundations and major donors via the telephone, letter, email or in person;
  • To ensure that funding applications are well researched, written, submitted and timely;
  • To work with colleagues to help produce compelling case studies and to compile reports;
  • To prepare and deliver funder reports to a high standard and on time;
  • To meticulously document and record all key activities and service-user statistics in electronic (Excel, Access) and paper form, in a regular and timely manner;
  • To assist with pitching appropriate appeals on online giving platforms (JustGiving, GlobalGiving, Virgin Money Giving);
  • To assist with identifying content for PAS’s e-newsletter, and with researching and posting appropriate material to PAS’ social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube) and website;
  • To help organise, promote and attend key PAS events where required;
  • To help interview, induct and supervise Fundraising & Communications volunteers.



  • To self-manage effectively and work with the minimum of administrative support;
  • To become conversant, and work in accordance, with PAS’ mission, aims and objectives;
  • To form effective working relationships with staff members, volunteers, trustees, donors, and relevant outside organisations;
  • To work within PAS' policies and procedures;
  • To maintain up-to-date statistics of service-users’ protected characteristics;
  • To keep an up-to-date electronic diary;
  • To maintain and observe an appropriate level of confidentiality at all times;
  • To prepare for, and attend, supervision and appraisal meetings with line manager;
  • An ability and willingness to work flexibly, including some evenings and weekends;
  • Other duties that may from time to time be necessary, compatible with the nature and grade of this post.





Qualifications, Skills and Abilities                 Essential or Desirable

  • Good standard of written and spoken English - E
  • Excellent interpersonal skills - E
  • Intermediate or advanced IT skills, particularly Word, Excel and Access - E
  • Excellent administration, organisation, time management and project management skills - E
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines - E
  • Strong telephone pitching skills - D



  • Experience of securing donations from trusts, foundations and/or major donors - E
  • Experience of researching and identifying trusts, foundations and/or major donors - E
  • Experience of writing compelling applications and reports - E

  • Experience of donor cultivation and relationship management - D
