Job description

The position of Communications Manager at Prospect Burma is an interesting and diverse role, of vital importance to ensuring the success of our small charity. This is an important time for Prospect Burma as we implement a new three-year strategy focussing on growth of our programmes, supported by income growth and enhancement of organisational systems.  

The post-holder will take responsibility, under the Executive Director, for Prospect Burma’s entire communications offering, working with Fundraising and Programmes departments in the UK and Myanmar to deliver on our business plan. The successful candidate will have strong experience of providing high quality and effective material for both online and offline content, experience in social media and digital communication, and in developing organisational language and voice. In the coming years we are seeking to raise Prospect Burma’s profile to new audiences in the UK and Myanmar, and this role will be vital to ensuring success.  

We are a small team of just five people in the UK office, and the successful candidate will enjoy the challenge of a varied workload and will be skilled in developing and implementing creative solutions.

Key Relationships 

The Communications Manager will report to the Executive Director, and will work closely with the Programmes Funding Manager (London), Supporter Relations Officer (London) and the charity’s Myanmar-based team. The Communications Manager will be supported by an advisory sub-committee of Trustees. 

Principal responsibilities 

A. Language and Branding 

  • Maintain and develop the charity’s brand, brand guidelines and standards of use  

  • Work with the management team to develop organisational language, in particular around new projects and organisational strategies 

  • Be the gatekeeper of the brand, ensuring consistency throughout the organisation 

B. Audience Engagement 

  • Undertake the production of written publications both internal and external including the Annual Report, newsletters and other publicity materials   

  • Maintain and develop the charity’s website and microsites to provide accurate and compelling information to a variety of audiences in the UK and Myanmar, and supporting the needs of the rest of the charity. Use Google Analytics to track the effectiveness of website content.  

  • Create engaging marketing campaigns for the charity’s programmes and events 

  • Manage a range of digital campaign and fundraising platforms, including Google AdWords and JustGiving 

  • Oversee the use of social media channels 

  • Maintain effective internal communications between departments and between the staff and board of trustees 

  • Oversee the creation and development of a series of short videos 

  • Support the planning, organisation and implementation of supporter events 

CStrategy, planning and innovation 

  • Use current and innovative trends to maximise and grow reach and engagement on social media  

  • Develop and implement a communications strategy that supports the charity’s 3-year aims 

  • Develop a public relations strategy that will raise the charity’s profile with a variety of stakeholders in Myanmar and the UK 

  • Identify key communication requirements in Myanmar; recruit, train and manage a Myanmar-based Communications Officer to fulfil those requirements. 

D. Other responsibilities 

  • Manage all aspects of communications in Myanmar  

  • Recruit and manage communications volunteers in the UK 

  • Support alumni communications within the ARCH structure  

  • Maintain and update the communications operations manual on a regular basis and run communications training sessions for staff 

  • Assist with correspondence and responding to enquiries where necessary. 

  • Other such duties as shall reasonably be required as part of a small, collaborative staff team. 

  • Some travel to Myanmar, when the Covid-19 pandemic is under control, may be required 

Person Specification 


  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, exceptional attention to detail and competency in writing, oral presentation, and copy for print / online production 

  • Proficient in the use of design-based IT packages such as InDesign  

  • Flexible, with a proven ability to plan, prioritise and organise events and tasks 

  • Ability to take initiative, analyse and assess problems, and suggest creative or innovative solutions; ability to identify areas for improvement in own areas of responsibility  

  • Proficiency in IT skills, using Microsoft Office software suite, web based software, Mailchimp and social media channels 

  • Competent in the management of websites using Wordpress, or similar CMS  

  • History of working for a small organisation and/or having the sole communications responsibility with an organisation 

  • Experience of PR and policy 

  • Confidence and ability to speak up when needed, with diplomacy and respect 

  • Proactive and highly organised, with good time management and planning skills, and attention to detail. 

  • Ability to manage a diverse range of projects, meet deadlines and work under pressure. 

  • Excellent team-working skills and the willingness to work flexibly within a small team. 


  • Knowledge of, and an interest in, Myanmar. 

  • An understanding of individual donor fundraising and stewardship 

  • Event management skills 

  • Experience in writing press releases and securing media coverage for campaigns 

  • Experience of recruiting and managing staff and volunteers. 

  • Creating and editing video content
