Software and Data Workers Project Organiser
Fixed term contract for 14 hours per week due to end in March 2020, however could be extended depending on funding.
Post holder will be based in our Edinburgh office, they will need to travel regularly within the city (and occasionally further afield) for meetings. Working hours can be flexible but the nature of the role will require working outside of normal working hours.
£14,301 per annum (£35,752 fte).

About the role
Prospect is seeking to recruit a Project Organiser, as part of a project to provide a union voice for software and data workers. This is a temporary role assigned to a project funded by the STUC Union Modernisation Fund. The Union Modernisation Fund project aims to develop innovative and new organising methods which can then be applied more widely by Prospect and also other unions to promote Fair Work and achieve the aims of the Fair Work Action Plan.
This project will attempt to develop a Prospect group for freelance software and data workers in Edinburgh, bringing together workers who are not covered by existing collective bargaining agreements and who may be working in non-traditional models of temporary, freelance, and in other ways precarious employment.
The role will involve working mostly in Edinburgh, as part of a small team, organising workers in the digital/tech sector. Your objective will be to help individuals understand the benefits of joining a union and helping them to develop skills, build confidence and organise in their workplaces. This role will involve running awareness/training sessions for workers, recruiting new members, developing potential activists and organising a number of events for tech/digital workers.
Prospect is seeking a talented and creative individual with experience of working within the sector or related industries alongside a knowledge union organising.
You will need to:
Be able to work independently or as part of a collaborative team to deliver the outcomes of the project.
Be an effective verbal and written communicator with experience of dealing with confidential and sensitive issues.
Be organised and have the ability to prioritise workloads and meet deadlines.
Be able to solve problems in a professional manner and tailor communications for different audiences.
Plan, promote, and deliver a number of events/meetings that will bring workers together to discuss working conditions in the sector.
Connect and reach out to workers through social media and other methods, helping them to build a network via a suitable online platform.
Be able to plan and delivery of training sessions.
Want to improve the world of work for everyone through promoting the values of the trade union movement.
Where this role fits in:
This is a temporary and part time role which is partially funded through project money from the STUC Union Modernisation Fund. You will join an 8 strong team working in Edinburgh as part of the Scotland team.
This project complements the existing Prospect plan to organise workers in digital technology (software and data) and our overall organising strategy. There is also the potential for some overlap with the BECTU digital sector.
This role will work closely with our Prospect Organiser in the Edinburgh office and be managed by the National Secretary for Scotland, Richard Hardy. You will also be working with a project officer from STUC who will oversee the project outcomes.
