'The Lookout' is the renovated hide at the RSPB's Bowling Green Marsh nature reserve in Topsham. It's more than a hide, it's a place of discovery and 'a window to the wild' for families to discover and enjoy. We need you to bring it alive with live interpretation of the surrounding natural beauty!
The Exe Estuary is beautiful and incredible for wildlife. We need to ensure every visitor feels at home, welcome and inspired by what they have seen, discovered and learnt from their experience at The Lookout. We need you to be the story teller, the welcome, the smile, the one who shows the visiting family what can be created at the activity table. The one who shows all ages how to hold and focus binoculars and bring that wildlife spectacle closer, because picking up binoculars for the first time can be confusing and intimidating, especially for little hands.
We will also need you to keep The Lookout inviting and a pleasant place by making sure it looks ship shape and looked after. The star attractions need looking after too, and so we will need you to keep the bird feeders topped up. Oh, and your visitors too by offering them the warming touch of tea and coffee.
You will be encouraging visitors of all ages to not only love and enjoy nature, but support it too by becoming a member of the RSPB, or supporting the RSPB's work in other ways. Nature needs us more than ever, so encouraging members to join is an essential part of this role.
You will become part of a friendly and dedicated team who are well-recognised and supported. You'll meet new people and build lasting relationships, not to mention getting a buzz from inspiring visitors to enjoy nature in our wildlife garden and appreciate the view from The Lookout!
You'll also have the opportunity to develop lots of new and existing skills in this role, in bird i.d, people engagement, optical knowledge and much more. Most important of all, your passionate ability will inspire the next generation to connect with nature.
Based on a Rota system, this role is very flexible and built around your timetable. You can do as little or as much as you want! There's also plenty of opportunity to do more, and different, things during the summer holidays and during events.
This role is perfect for someone who has an active interest in the RSPB, but doesn't necessarily have the bird identification skills as yet. Of course if you have some knowledge, we'd love you to share it with visitors!
You need to really enjoy working with people (especially families) and have an enthusiastic manner, deliver a warm welcome and exceptional customer service to all visitors.
You will have a passionate ability to inspire the next generation to connect with nature.
Appropriate training will be provided and expenses will be re-imbursed where necessary.
The RSPB is the UK charity working to secure a healthy environment for birds and wildlife, helping to create a better world for all of us. We belong to BirdLife International, the global partnership of bird conservation organisations.
Your time and skills could make a real difference to the work of the RSPB and it would be great if you could join us.
