Job description

ReachOut is a mentoring charity working with children in disadvantaged areas of the UK to raise aspirations and help them grow in character and attainment. 

We are looking for a versatile, all round marketing and communications professional to take forward our ambitious growth plans.  Working across the organisation to support fundraising, volunteering and network growth, you’ll need solid marketing experience and knowledge of a variety of techniques, tools and channels.  Excellent written communication skills, a creative streak, bags of enthusiasm and demonstrable empathy for our work with young people are also a must.

Main purpose of role 

The Marketing & Communications Manager is responsible for the implementation of ReachOut’s marketing and communications plan which seeks to drive growth of the charity across various areas in line with our strategic objectives.  This includes supporting fundraising and income generation activities, acquiring and retaining supporters, as well as supporting the recruitment of schools, volunteers and delivery partners across all locations.   

The postholder will provide an expert marketing resource within the charity, working across the organisation to build ReachOut’s reputation with our expanding network of supporters and partners, providing coherence and consistency to ReachOut’s messaging.   

Key responsibilities 

Marketing & Communications 

  • In conjunction with the Head of Marketing & Business Development, input into clear marketing and communications plans that supports the charity’s growth in line with the strategic objectives.   

  • Work closely with project delivery and fundraising teams to gain an in depth understanding of ReachOut’s target audiences  

  • Carry out market research with ReachOut’s key audiences to inform effective targeting and positioning 

  • Working closely with the fundraising and project delivery teams to design, develop and deliver high quality integrated cross-channel campaigns that support ReachOut’s growth objectives  

  • Source and maintain a bank of up to date case studies, photos and video content about ReachOut for use with funders, volunteers and other stakeholders.  

  • Act as a “brand guardian”, ensuring that messaging, tone and look is joined up, consistent and well thought-out across all internal and external communication. 

  • Manage the ReachOut website ensuring that it is attractive, easy to use, regularly updated and appeals to stakeholders, working with external suppliers as required    

  • Oversee ReachOut’s social media channels, ensuring that they support the charity’s objectives and activities.  

  • Design, draft and project manage production of marketing materials and resources for use by the ReachOut team. 

  • Write and sell in press releases and liaise with media around key events and moments 

  • Promote equality and diversity and inclusion by ensuring that communications are accessible and representative of young people supported by ReachOut  

  • Keep abreast of the latest developments in marketing & communications and sharing best practice with the ReachOut Team  

  • Work effectively with paid and pro bono agencies and suppliers supporting ReachOut’s marketing and communications work.   

  • Manage junior marketing and communications staff, interns and volunteers as required  


  • Provide regular information and reports to the Senior Management Team on the progress of marketing & communications activities  

  • Ensure that ReachOut’s policies and procedures are adhered to 

  • Act in a manner that is in keeping with ReachOut’s values at all times 

  • Any other duties deemed appropriate by your line manager and consummate with the role  

Person Specification 


  • A broad range of marketing experience including content marketing, copywriting and editorial skills, email marketing, social media, PR and events.  

  • Extensive experience in the use of websites, digital channels and social media  

  • Demonstrable track record of success in previous roles  

  • Experience briefing and managing external suppliers  

  • Experience of writing for a variety of different audiences 


  • Good general marketing skills with a clear understanding of brand, positioning and messaging  

  • Exceptional written communication skills and excellent attention to detail  

  • Exceptional oral communication skills  

  • Very strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop excellent working relationships across a variety of stakeholder groups   

  • A good eye for design and understanding of creative and design tools: ideally Canva and/or Adobe Photoshop & In-Design   


  • Strong empathy with ReachOut’s work, a good understanding of the challenges facing young people and the role of mentoring 

  • Entrepreneurial, innovative and creative thinker, able to spot and exploit opportunities 

  • A good problem solver, able to improvise and act under own direction where necessary  

  • Proactive and dynamic with a positive ‘can do’ attitude and a clear focus on outcomes and impact.   

  • Works well under pressure and to deadlines  

  • A demonstrable commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion  

  • Ability to work evenings and occasional weekends as required by the role (for which time of in lieu will be offered)
