Our partner is a well-respected advocacy INGO. They are seeking to recruit a Project Accountant to provide financial management support to project managers and the broader programmes teams.
Responsibilities
- Finance business partner to project teams and partners, offering financial management support.
- Prepare project budgets, monitor expenditure and cashflows, and prepare management accounts, including variance analyses and supporting narrative reports.
- Grant management, compliance and reporting – preparing financial reports to donors, ensuring that these meet their requirements.
- Ensure the integrity and operational effectiveness of project accounting procedures, developing, and maintaining these as required.
- Supporting the broader finance team, including junior finance staff, in any ad hoc analysis, reporting and project work as required
Person Specification
- Accountant, qualified or QBE, with at least 5 years of experience in accounting, an understanding of accounting & finance principles and management accounting & reporting.
- Experience of project accounting, grant compliance & management is desirable; an understanding of the grant compliance & reporting requirements of the EU and German government grants is desirable.
- Strong IT skills, including advanced MSExcel skills. Competence in SQL an advantage.
- Strong communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills, including ability to communicate financial matters to non-finance staff.
- Quick learner, organised and flexible, able to meet tight deadlines.
- Fluent in English, with excellent spoken and reporting writing skills. Working knowledge of French or Spanish is highly desirable. Knowledge of German is not essential or required.

The role
The Project Accountant will work with the Senior Project Accountant and the finance team in delivering an efficient financial control environment within Salix, and actively contribute to continuous improvement projects. They will work closely with members of the Salix finance team as well as build relationships with other staff across Salix.
The successful candidate will work with the Senior Project Accountant to deliver and improve our financial controls framework through effective design and implementation of policies, procedures, and process change. The successful candidate will be expected to assist with financial controls advice and be able to respond to and resolve problems. Together with the Senior Project Accountant, the successful candidate will take a proactive stance in relation to changes in legislation and the organization to ensure a strong control environment.
What you will need to succeed
- Good knowledge of accounting processes and approaches, basic accounting concepts, budgeting, forecasting, financial, and management accounts.
- Proven experience in process review, development and improvement of financial systems and control processes, and ability to resolve identified issues.
- A good understanding of the importance, operation and interactions of financial systems, and controls processes operating within large volume transactions and complex organisations.

Additionally we are looking for candidates with ideally experience within social housing or a similar sector with knowledge of accounting regulations, legislation and current practice and experience of rent setting & regulation.
As a management role, we'd also be looking for exceptional people skills with the ability to motivate a team to perform to a consistently high standard and build positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

As the financial accountant you will work closely with the wider team a well as the finance business partner and head of finance to work on process improvement, and drive the charity forward.
Key responsibilities:
- Responsible for timely year end process and preparation of the annual consolidated statutory financial and lead statements, including liaising with the charity’s auditors and dealing with audit queries
- Ensuring that all balance sheets accounts are reconciled frequently, and any differences are dealt with accordingly, including bank reconciliations, intercompany, fundraising income and restricted fund reports
