Job description

Redemption Roasters are on a mission to reduce reoffending rates through coffee.

We believe exceptional coffee can come from people and places you wouldn’t expect; at our roastery in HMP The Mount, we train offenders in coffee industry skills with the aim of reducing reoffending in the UK. Upon release, we help our graduates find work in our own coffee shops, or our network.

As a social enterprise, we think differently to other specialty coffee companies;  we strive for profit in order to achieve our purpose.  Every member of the Redemption Roasters team has a role to play in achieving that purpose; to challenge perceptions and change lives through Speciality coffee.


We are looking for an enthusiastic person to join our team as an Employment Support Coach. You will be responsible for helping graduates, from custody and the community, on their journey into long-term employment. You will support them personally and professionally. You will be responsible for maintaining employment outcomes and securing our internal goal of a 20% minimum ex-offender workforce.


The job involves:

  • Overall responsibility for Graduate affairs from when they first come into contact with Redemption, in prison or in the community, until they are established in the jobs market in their own right                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    

  • Establish links with would-be Graduates whilst in prison and assess their potential for a career path in the coffee industry

  • Find job placements for Graduates either within the company or, if appropriate, elsewhere

  • Act as a link between partner employers and Graduates

  • Assist Graduates with pastoral and practical needs: parole, housing, bank account, CV, interview booking, travel arrangements etc.

  • Communicate weekly with every active Graduate

  • Serve as a positive role model

  • Exercise good judgement in creating and respecting boundaries with Graduates

  • Act as an emergency point of contact for Graduates and manage conflict situations

  • Day-to-day management and ensuring the most effective application of the Hardship Fund

  • Keep accurate records, paperwork and fulfill reporting in line with any funding requirements


This role requires:

  • A proven ability to establish and maintain positive, professional and motivational relationships 

  • Basic counselling skills including excellent listening skills 

  • The ability to give impartial, productive advice tailored to each individual

  • A good understanding of boundaries and confidentiality 

  • A proven ability to work well within a team and a professional approach to fostering strong external contacts 

  • An ability to give, receive and act on feedback

  • Good verbal and written English

  • Effective administration and accurate record keeping skillsCommitment to Redemption’s values and mission statement


The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • At least 1 year of working directly with people with complex needs

  • Resilience with a proven ability to deal with setbacks, frustrations and unpredictability 

  • An ability to be both assertive and empathetic 

  • Resourcefulness and an ability to solve problems

  • Experience in working with people from a diverse range of backgrounds 

  • Awareness of, and positive ways of addressing, issues like addiction, violence and mental health issues
