About Refugee Action

Refugee Action exists to help refugees and people seeking asylum who’ve survived some of the world’s worst regimes. After fleeing unimaginable horrors, they find themselves in a continued crisis in the UK, often homeless, living in poverty and unable to work. We provide these highly vulnerable, traumatised people with the support they need to live again with dignity. Then we help them build safe, happy and productive lives in the UK. Our vision is that refugees and people seeking asylum will be welcome in the UK. They will get justice, live free of poverty and be able to successfully rebuild their lives.

Our vision for a welcoming UK has never been more important. Last year almost 80 million people were displaced, the biggest refugee crisis since WWII. Add to this the most hostile Government we have ever faced, now’s the time to stand up for the rights of refugees.

It is a crucial time to be part of Refugee Action as we come to the end of our current strategy (2019-22) and embark on our next strategic period. We will do this through securing systemic change through our campaigns to change government policies, our direct services, and our work to strengthen and connect other service delivery organisations. You can read more about what we do here.

We will also continue with our commitment in our strategy to do far more to learn from and shift power to refugees and people seeking asylum. We are also striving to be an actively anti-racist organisation. Both commitments are a top priority for our new CEO as set out in his first public statement on Twitter here.

About the role

Never has there been a more important time to stand up for refugees in Britain and the current grant funding environment reflects this. Refugee Action has developed a range of strong, high value partnerships with funders like Paul Hamlyn Foundation and Comic Relief, as well as several significant National Lottery projects. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a passionate and enthusiastic Business Development Manager to join our grants team. Working with the team across the wider fundraising department, and colleagues across services and campaigns to identify and develop opportunities for future strategic partnerships, this role will play a pivotal role in diversifying and strengthening our grants partnership portfolio and income.

It is a fantastic time to join this growing team if you want to play a leading role in transforming a business development programme. With the whole charity developing a new three-year strategy over the coming year, there will be really exciting opportunities to take both existing and new funding partners on a journey and create fulfilling and valuable partnerships for both Refugee Action and grant makers. The Fundraising department has also established an Expert by Experience Fundraising Advisory Group, to consult people with lived experience and develop and shape partnership plans together. Providing high quality account management, research and strategic planning, the successful candidate will play an invaluable part in growing the Business Development programme at a vital time for Refugee Action.

To succeed in this role you will have:

  • Demonstrable experience in relationship development and account management, with the skills and ability to cultivate prospective and existing funders to maximise funding opportunities.
  • Strong communications skills, with experience of developing compelling funding proposals, reports and presentations for a variety of audiences.
  • Proven track record in securing and managing significant grants (six or seven figures) from trust, lottery, and statutory donors.
  • Experience of bringing together a range of internal stakeholders and operational teams to lead on cross-team projects and bid developments.
  • Excellent numeracy skills and proven ability to develop budgets, monitor management accounts and understand funder finance reports.

Those with lived experience as a refugee are encouraged to apply.
