The Refugee Council is one of the leading organisations in the UK working with asylum seekers and refugees. Our operational teams based in various locations in England provide advice and assistance across a wide range of issues, including helping asylum seekers through the complexities of the asylum system, addressing issues of destitution and assisting refugees and asylum seekers to access key services including housing, welfare benefits, health, education and employment.

Purpose of the Job

As part of a new, short-term pilot project, we are recruiting a training lead to work collaboratively with our Head of Therapeutic Services and Transforming Therapy Project Manager in leading the design of a new therapeutic skills training model. The training will embed learning, reflective practice, and will be coupled with time-limited further interventions to reinforce learning. This will be collaboratively developed with the Home Office (the funder for this pilot) and informed by people with lived experience to create a new user informed training module and programme that can be comparably tested across regions.

This training module will be designed and tested with target organisations in two locations (London and Birmingham), as well as a control group made up of others from other parts of the country. The training will be delivered within the lifetime of the Transforming Therapy Project timeframe (Oct 21 – March 22); therefore, once the new module has been developed in co-ordination with the Home Office, the training delivery to organisations can be expected to last for a maximum of 8 weeks (Jan, Feb 22) to allow time for evaluating its efficacy

Main Duties and Responsibilities


  • To research in-house expertise, liaise with head of therapeutic services and project manager on content for a new training package (2 training sessions – 1st covering knowledge, skills and information, 2nd covering reflective practice and learning)
  • Make decisions on training content and sessional trainer recruitment & expertise
  • To arrange logistics including online training set ups, organising sessional trainer expenses etc.
  • Lead on the involvement and co-design and co-delivery of experts by experience as part of training sessions
  • Support experts by experience to engage in training and provide them with the necessary support to co-deliver training

Marketing to attract organisations to engage with our unique training offer

  • Identify priority organisations to undertake our training. Work with the project manager to develop criteria to identify frontline roles which have the greatest impact on people seeking asylum and greatest potential to identify signs of trauma e.g. Home Office staff, Asylum Seeker housing providers (SERCO, MEARS, Clearsprings),
  • Recruit organisations by showcasing how training will improve their work/performance objectives.
  • Work with freelance designers to create attractive flyers and promote our training in a variety of forums, Eventbrite, networks, publications and through individual contact with key contacts

The post-holder is responsible for:

Cooperating with the Refugee Council in delivering all legal responsibilities in respect of your own and your colleagues, volunteers, clients and others health and safety whilst at work.

Becoming familiar with the Refugee Council’s Health & Safety Policy and procedures including evacuation procedures at your workplace.

Carrying out risk assessments of your own work and especially of your own workstation to ensure that you do not expose yourself or others to unnecessary risk.


In order to deliver services effectively, a degree of flexibility is needed and the post-holder may be required to perform work not specifically referred to above. Such duties will, however, fall within the scope of the job, at the appropriate grade. The job description will be subject to periodic review with the post-holder to ensure it accurately reflects the duties of the job.
