Job description

Do you have a passion for working with people and helping to end homelessness? If so, Rentstart is the workplace for you! An exciting opportunity is available to join our fantastic team in Elmbridge to work towards ending the cycle of homelessness in our borough.

Why this role matters

Are you passionate about wanting to work with people who are homeless?  Are you motivated to reach out to people who are rough-sleeping and encourage them towards a life off the streets? If so, we would love to hear from you.

Rentstart is a homelessness charity based in Walton on Thames and has been running for 20 years. Our aim is to connect with, house and then support people who are homeless or vulnerably housed. The majority of our clients are supported into the private rented sector.

Each year we provide advice to around 400 people and go on to house and support circa 150 people (support is given for as long as each client requires it). Most of our clients cannot access private rented accommodation without our help.

This role is crucial to our work, connecting with vulnerable individuals, often with challenging behaviours, and support them to move forward with their lives.

Job Description - Overview

You will find and reach out to rough-sleeper clients who are either not aware of Rentstart or who are resistant to help. Some of these people may be chaotic, may have mental health and addiction issues but need your help and support. You will focus on developing a relationship with the individual, offering personalised, creative, innovative, and effective support. You will maintain the relationship with clients, build trust and work in an inclusive and empowering way as a single point of contact.

Throughout your work you will have some autonomy and periods of time lone working. Your intervention with these people will aim to result in engagement with the services of Rentstart. You will provide initial 1-1 assessments for clients who are referred to Rentstart, assessing their suitability for housing and support, and where appropriate create support frameworks and/or referrals to supporting agencies. You will provide support for living and lifestyle needs for clients, including engagement with mental health, drug/alcohol, GP, and debt support agencies. You will assist housed clients with life skills, including tenancy training and benefit support. You will monitor and track your outreach services and report on findings on a regular basis.

This role requires a committed, resilient, and flexible individual who can contribute to delivering the team’s range of functions including the ability to provide real opportunities to people in need of help to access the services they require. This role involves unsociable hours and weekend work in order to provide the most effective service to those on the streets and can be demanding but is equally rewarding.

Please see the Job Description & Person Specification documents for a full description of the role including a breakdown of duties.
