This is your chancee to join an amazing team that works to reform economics education around the world. We are excited to launch our search for a Membership Coordinator, a position that it is the heart of what we do and could be a stepping stone to a career in organising or pluralist economics.

About Rethinking Economics

Rethinking Economics (RE) is an international network working to build a better economics in society and the classroom. We started as a student movement in 2012 and have since grown to become a registered charity with a 7-person staff team. Through a mixture of campaigning, events and projects, we support over 100 groups in over 30 countries around the world, alongside thousands of supportive members of the public, to reform the university economics curriculum to make it more pluralist, critical and applicable to the real world.

Rethinking Economics is undertaking an exciting transition process in which we are developing and expanding the future of the organisation. We will be accepting candidates from the UK, Germany and candidates based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Over the next year we will be organising another online conference, launching our Members’ Council and training our constantly growing network of groups. It’s an exciting time for Rethinking Economics as it continues to grow across the world.

What we’re looking for

Someone with significant volunteer or work experience in organising, particularly in a student or economics environment. The ideal candidate will be proficient at one to ones and have a keen eye for identifying leaders and what training support they may require. An understanding of organising structures would be very beneficial in this role as well as an understanding of how to run or organise a training event.

Terms & Conditions

Reporting to: Senior Organiser

Starting salary: £13,800 - £14,400 for 3 days a week. This is based on a pay scale of £23,000 - £24,000 pro rata per annum. Any offer made will be non-negotiable

Start date: January 2021 (negotiable)

Contract type: 1 year contract with possible extension

Hours: 2 or 3 days a week based on 7.5 hours per day, which is reducing to 7 hours per day in April 2021. Regular evening and weekend work will be necessary from time to time, for which time off in lieu can be claimed. We support flexible working across the whole team. 

Benefits: Statutory pension increasing to 5% matched from April 2021 (only applicable to the UK candidates, negotiable for candidates based elsewhere), 25 days holiday pro rata in addition to winter break between Christmas and New Year, access to bespoke economics education, person centred training opportunities, yearly cost of living increase.

Location and Travel: The role will occasionally require international travel to events or to our or one of our partners offices. Any work-related travel will be reimbursed, not including commuting.

For UK based applications – Remote/Flexible. Our office is based in Manchester and you could  be required to travel there on average once per month. 

For South Africa based applications –Office based/Flexible. You will need to be within commutable distance to Institute of Economic Justice, 62 Juta Street, Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

For Germany based applications – Remote/Flexible. Our partners are ZOE. Institute for future-fit economies, Thomas-Mann-Str. 36, 53111 Bonn, Germany. For those seeking an office based role candidates will need to be based near or commutable to Bonn. Remote roles can be based anywhere in Germany but you will be required to travel to Bonn on average once per month.

Purpose of the Role: 

To lead on supporting member-groups with induction, training and any administration required with ensuring local groups can thrive.

Responsibilities

Main Areas of Responsibility

  • Induction and training of local groups

  • Regular one to ones with current groups

  • Main contact for all local groups

  • Supporting the Senior Organiser on the development of a Members’ Council

  • Supporting the Senior Organiser on training or network events

Person Specification - Key Skills and Experience

The role profile asks for a wide range of competencies and we recognise that we are unlikely to find a candidate who fits every requirement. If you fit some of the essential and/or desirable criteria and believe you have the potential to learn the other areas of the role, we’d like to hear from you. A strong background in economics, organising and movement building would be of great advantage.

Essential

  • Ability to facilitate meetings
  • Experience of working with student or youth organisations / campaigns
  • Ability to respond effectively and quickly to requests for support from students
  • Fluency (written and spoken) in English

Desirable

  • Fluency (written and spoken) in a language other than English
  • Experience on delivering training workshops
  • Experience of overseeing online communications platforms (e.g. Slack)
  • Experience working on economics education reform at a local, national or international level
  • Familiarity with how decisions are made at universities and how economics departments are structured

Economics Knowledge Specification

  • An interest and understanding of economics, particularly a knowledge of alternative and pluralist economics
  • A passion to reform economics teaching and practise
  • Higher education qualification in economics or economics with a related social science
