Job description

Research Manager

As Airwars continues to evolve and grow as a high impact conflict casualty monitoring and advocacy organisation focused upon reducing civilian harm, high quality research by our diverse and skilled team drives much of our success.

Airwars is hiring a full time Research Manager, whose role will be in getting the best out of our complex and growing research process, while also playing a key role in charting our path forward as a research-driven organisation. The successful applicant will be a member of the small Airwars management team, and will be a key contributor to our future development.

This full time staff position is offered as an initial one year contract. While normally based at our South East London headquarters, the role will likely involve at least some hybrid home working for the foreseeable future, as a result of Covid.

Duties for the Research Manager: These are expected to include the following:

  • Management of our diverse research teams across multiple conflicts and geographical locations, including scheduling, and the meeting of agreed targets.

  • Ensuring that quality and standards among the team are well maintained, and that our methodology is properly adhered to by all concerned.

  • Training, oversight and support for team members, including regular review and effective implementation of our secondary trauma mitigation policy.

  • Authorship and oversight of key reports and analytics.

  • Liaising with Airwars’ design consultants on research-related website development, including data visualisations.

  • Supporting our advocacy and investigations teams with high quality research.

  • Contributions to our social media engagements.

  • Team feedback and conduct.

  • Engagement with external partners.

  • Key input on organisational and research budgeting.

Key skills required

  • A demonstrable record of at least two years of effective management of research teams.

  • High quality written and spoken English.

  • A proven ability to deliver high quality work to deadline.

  • Regional knowledge of the Middle East; and/ or North and East Africa - and ideally an understanding of key issues in one or more of the conflict nations we monitor (presently Iraq, Syria, Libya, Yemen and Somalia).

  • A sound understanding of the critical value of civilian casualty monitoring, and of transparency and accountability issues.

  • Educated to degree level.

Airwars strives to be an equal opportunities employer. We welcome in particular applications from people from conflict-affected nations including refugees, who are entitled to work full time in the United Kingdom. Exceptional candidates are invited to send their motivation letter and CV by Friday June 18th 2021.

Application Instructions

Only applicants with both motivation letter and CV will be considered
