Job Description

Robertson Bell are proud to be working in a retained partnership with Department for Education on a national recruitment campaign for Finance, Risk and Assurance.

DfE are a ministerial department supported by 18 agencies, public bodies, and non-ministerial departments, with offices based across England including Manchester, Sheffield, Nottingham, Coventry and Darlington. They are responsible for children's services and education, including higher and further education policy, apprenticeships and wider skills across England.

A new Committee, the Investment Committee, has been established to analyse material business cases. As a result, a new division has been set up to ensure finance plays an integral part in assisting the Committee to scrutinise and improve the quality of business cases. You will be responsible in reviewing these business cases and will be the primary interface between the wider department and the Investment Committee.

This role offers a great opportunity to join a thriving organisation and to make a tangible impact by applying existing finance skills as well as developing new abilities. You will be part of the strategic finance division and develop a more structured quality assurance arrangement which will yield sound management information, great appraisal quality and reinforce compliance with appraisal standards. Consequently, you will be driving change, and working and influencing senior individuals across the department.

As a result, strong leadership and interpersonal skills are of paramount importance to this role. The post-holder will partner and collaborate with a range of stakeholders, acting as the lead finance contact for financial assurance and embedding finance in decision making. This role will bring together financial knowledge with policy, strategy, commercial awareness and analysis. As the second line of assurance to the Investment Committee, the post holder will also ensure stewardship of public funds, efficient and effective use of budgets and provide directors and officials with insightful financial evaluation to inform robust decision making.

We are looking for an ambitious and proactive qualified finance professional, with first class communication skills so that they are confident in advising, challenging and negotiating with senior individuals to produce high quality financial reports within a short turnaround timeframe. Excellent interpersonal skills are required in order to question and challenge. Commercial and policy knowledge and/or previous experience in a policy/commercial delivery environment are also useful.
