Job description

Position Overview:

Based in our London office (1 Friday St, London EC4M 9BT), Room to Read’s Development Director, United Kingdom, leads our fundraising efforts and team in this global market. Reporting to the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) Director, the UK Director will be responsible for overall fundraising strategy and execution regarding individuals, corporations, and foundations within the United Kingdom.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage market strategy in the United Kingdom to raise a minimum of USD4MM for the market, with a stretch goal of 6MM annually.

  • Supervise the London-based Development Manager, providing inspiration and support enabling the Manager to meet and achieve their goals.

  • Lead market development activities including: liaising with donors and soliciting donations, identifying new potential investors, maintaining accurate donor records, managing expense budgets, managing events, coordinating with local volunteer chapters and representing Room to Read in the UK market.

  • Establish and monitor revenue goals for all revenue streams in the United Kingdom

  • Manage a portfolio of relationships with high-level individual and corporate donors in the region with a personal fundraising goal of a minimum of USD2MM+ annually.

  • Support the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) Director in managing the United Kingdom Regional Board

  • Manage the UK Board of Trustees

  • Report revenue progress to the UK Trustee Board and EMEA Director and Chief Development and Communications Officer and seek guidance as appropriate.

  • Oversee the annual United Kingdom signature fundraising events including gala fundraisers with an annual revenue goal of USD 1.5k-2MM+ from existing and new donors.

  • Represent Room to Read at various fundraising events and in donor cultivation meetings.

  • As part of the DevCom leadership team, collaborate closely with the EMEA Director on fundraising strategy, as well as with the Senior Director of Global Business Operations, Senior Director of Global Partnerships, and Vice President of Marketing and Communications to support the overall performance of the department and achievement of annual goals.

  • Ensure that donor records and revenue forecasts are accurate within DevCom department databases (Salesforce as appropriate).

  • Working with the Senior Director of Global Business Operations and the EMEA Director and global legal team, to ensure the market is GDPR compliant while also maximizing potential within the market as well as complying with the UK Charity Commission Guidelines.

  • Working with research team members on the Development Business Operations team, conduct research on individuals, corporations, and family foundations with the goal of uncovering new prospects in the United Kingdom.

  • Work closely with People Operations staff to assist in the coordination and management of office space and logistics, including planning for growth, negotiating agreements, overseeing procurement, communicating IT requirements, managing expenses, and identifying potential issues

 

Qualifications:  

Required:

  • Demonstrable, strong knowledge of the UK philanthropy landscape

  • Minimum 10 years work experience working in business development with at least 2 years of non-profit team leadership experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to raised funds in the range of USD 4-6 million annually. If not a non-profit fundraiser, has raised the equivalent or more in the private sector.

  • Experience independently raising six and seven figure gifts. 

  • Experience working with Boards to raise six and seven figure gifts.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with both expats and local high net worth individuals and corporations.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and nurture business development and administrative teams.

  • History of dedicated volunteer activity and/or commitment to nonprofit organizations.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and execute business development activities

  • Proven ability to work strategically with senior executives

  • Strong presentation skills

  • Positive initiative and mature judgment

  • Highly organized and self-motivated

  • Able to balance competing priorities, complex situations and tight deadlines

  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills in English

  • Ability to travel internationally

  • Prior success working closely and building relationships with diverse groups of people

  • Experience living or working internationally is a plus

  • Working visa is a plus
