The RSPB has a mission to put people at the heart of our work, to harness their power and incredible ability to make a difference. This role offers an exciting opportunity to lead the front-line delivery of RSPB's innovative Saving Nature Through People strategy at a local level, inspiring people to connect with nature and empowering them to take action for it.
Based in Manchester's Mersey Valley - a network of visitor sites containing a mosaic of habitats just four miles from Manchester City Centre - and working in partnership with Manchester City Council, the Community Project Officer will engage with members of the public and volunteer groups to effect positive change for nature and people within the Mersey Valley in particular.
Manchester Community Project Officer
Reference number: A3741219
Location: Chorlton, Manchester
Salary starting at: £19,602 to £21,236 per annum pro rata - Applicants should expect under normal circumstances to receive an offer at the bottom of the advertised range
Hours: Part time, 15 hours per week
Contract: Fixed Term until December 2020
We are looking for an effective and inspirational communicator, with a real passion for nature, who has experience of engaging with a range of volunteers and a proven track record of successfully promoting volunteering opportunities. You will work closely with local 'Friends of' groups to increase their effectiveness and to direct their practical conservation work using the Mersey Valley Habitat Management Plan, developed in partnership with Manchester City Council.
You will have experience of volunteer recruitment, induction and management, and the ability to motivate volunteers to independently deliver organisational objectives. Experience of delivering events that successfully engage with families would be an advantage.
Working in partnership with others is a key part of this role, and the successful candidate will have proven experience in building strong and effective partnerships that deliver against collective objectives. You will work closely with on the ground Manchester City Council staff, collaborating with them to achieve shared outcomes that reflect both organisations' priorities.
The Community Project Officer will be the RSPB lead in the Manchester Nature Consortium and work with partners to plan and deliver Manchester Festival of Nature 2020 - an exciting event building on a successful festival in 2019 which engaged with over 7,000 visitors at Heaton Park, inspiring them about the work of the Consortium partners and encouraging more people to take action for nature.
This role will be based at the Manchester City Council office at Chorlton Water Park. The successful candidate will be willing and able to work independently, with proven time management and problem-solving skills that enable them to progress the project at pace. The ability to make decisions that enable the continued delivery of key objectives and to keep the project on track is crucial, as is the ability to communicate these decisions, where applicable, with stakeholders and partners.
The delivery of RSPB's Saving Nature Through People strategy is in its early stages and there is scope for the learning from the RSPB's work in the Mersey Valley to be used to inform similar future projects in other locations. Therefore, there may be the opportunity for this role to be extended beyond the stated end date.
The RSPB is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. This post is subject to the appropriate safeguarding checks upon appointment.
Closing date: 26 January 2020
The interviews for this role will be held in the Manchester City Council Office in Chorlton, Manchester, on 4 February 2020.
