Title:                     Port Chaplain

Reports to:           Director of Programme

Hours:                   Full time. 37.5 hrs per week worked and includes weekends

Based at:               Southampton

Salary:                   £24K plus housing allowance


As Port Chaplain you will represent Sailors’ Society. You will provide in the port of Southampton and the surrounding area a Christian ministry, welfare support, counselling and general assistance to all seafarers irrespective of race, colour or creed.  “Seafarers” shall include serving, retired and intending, their families and dependants. You will provide port chaplaincy in the port of Southampton.  You will manage costs and drive contributions to the society’s funds and develop support services for women seafarers visiting the port.


Port chaplaincy

  • Assessing individual seafarers’ and their families’ needs and providing appropriate help

  • Conducting church services and special services:

    • during ship visitation

    • from Head Office and the centre

    • from kindred societies

    • from Owners, Agents, Police, Rescue Services etc.

  • Visiting ships daily

  • Making prison visits as and when required

  • Making visits to seafarers’ homes - these may be required from time to time and usually undertaken when requested by seafarers, Shipping Companies or Agents.

  • Making hospital visits as and when required

  • Speaking to church groups and other fund-giving societies about the Society’s work

  • To take you turn working at the centre and supporting staff pastorally
  • Lead a team of staff and volunteers in all aspects of delivering the best experience to every seafarer all of the time
  • To ensure that all policies and procedures are in place with ship visits and volunteer visits
  • To maintain accurate record of activities and report regular information in timely manner to the Programme team
  • To communicate regularly, all key information to the team in the most effective way using the most appropriate media including Team Meetings and Daily Briefings
  • To collect and deal appropriately with customer feedback in line with Society policy and procedures
  • To ensure adequate team coverage to meet service needs. Effectively control labour so that every team member is deployed in an appropriate manner
  • Work within budget
  • To recruit, train, coach and develop the team to ensure good standards and a great guest experience
  • Recruit, support and encourage a volunteer base and peer-support

Experience and Knowledge

  • Theological training to degree standard
  • Ordained minister
  • Minimum 2 years management experience – volunteer management desirable
  • Have worked within a customer facing environment
  • Have an understanding of the shipping industry
  • The ability to work independently on own initiative, and co-operatively within a team environment
  • The ability to work under pressure
  • Computer and IT literate
  • Additional language beneficial
  • Full Driving Licence
