Job description

We are looking for a Head of Volunteer Services to lead the delivery of key strategic developments and innovations for volunteer services. As Head of Volunteer Services, you’ll provide leadership in all operational activity in relation to volunteer recruitment, development and volunteer support services. You will also ensure Samaritans maintains a relevant volunteer offer that allows for growth, flexibility and development of our volunteer base.

We are a fun, friendly and supportive team whose focus is on delivering excellence to our callers and volunteers. The team sits within the operations directorate and is split into Safeguarding and Caller Support, Quality and Service Improvement and Volunteer Services. Between us and the senior volunteers that work alongside us, we support 201 branches and over 20,000 amazing volunteers across the UK and ROI, whilst ensuring we provide a safe and effective service to our callers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead high performing cross-functional teams to deliver organisation-wide strategic objectives
  • Line manage and coach four individuals – two Volunteer Managers, a Case Coordinator and a Functional Lead for Volunteering (volunteer role)
  • Works closely with Senior Volunteers, Hub Service Directors, Branch Directors, Regional Directors and Functional Leads
  • Develops new and innovative organisation wide volunteer initiatives and drives volunteer engagement across the organisation
  • Strategic lead on programme of activity in relation to volunteer services including development of proposals, funding opportunities, scoping and accountability for delivery
  • Responsible for pitching proposals, developing programme and project plans and for regular reporting for all volunteer initiatives to Board of Trustees, Service and Quality Committee and Regional Directors
  • Responsible for budgets across restricted, unrestricted and designated funds

Skills and Experience

  • Strong experience within a people/ HR, or volunteer development role
  • Experience of developing and leading a high performing cross-functional team
  • Experience of leading the delivery of services including major change programmes at a national level
  • Experience in developing policy and procedures at an organisational level
  • Excellent critical thinking, strategic planning and problem-solving skills
  • Able to manage risk and achieve strategic objectives within financial constraints
  • Demonstrable experience of strategy development and delivery
  • Experience of programme management and successful delivery of complex change initiatives
  • A collaborative working style and resilient with strong personal drive
  • Able to effectively prioritise competing priorities under pressure
  • People Management or Volunteer Development qualification (essential)
  • Project Management qualification (desirable)
