Job Description

We are looking for an effective and inspiring leader to join us as General Counsel, to provide strategic legal advice to our Board and management, and to lead our Legal & Compliance team.

In Save the Children, we fight for children every single day. Our Support Services Division provides leadership and direction in the business of running an efficient organisation. We ensure our resources are used to maximum effect. We go the extra mile - and we don’t rest until the work is done.

As General Counsel, you will provide legal advice to Save the Children’s Trustees and management on all aspects of the charity’s work, ensuring the charity meets the highest standards of good governance. You will lead a busy and committed team, responsible for legal matters as well as fraud, data protection, serious incident reporting and other compliance issues and help the charity develop innovative new ways of delivering its mission. In addition, you will:

  • Advise the trustees, executive directors and senior managers on the legal risks to the charity and ensure they are aware of legal issues relevant to their areas of responsibility.
  • Promote good governance of the charity and discharge the duties of Company Secretary, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, in particular ensuring effective serious incident reporting.
  • Lead, manage and motivate the Legal & Compliance team, ensuring that they have clear objectives and receive meaningful feedback on their performance.
  • Ensure Save the Children staff receive appropriate advice on legal issues and exposures, including on corporate governance, contracts, charity law, fundraising, grants, intellectual property and media, and ensuring the charity has effective standard terms and conditions and contracting processes.
  • Ensure effective policies and procedures for managing key legal compliance risks, in particular fraud and bribery, terrorism financing, data protection and information security.

To be successful, you will be an English qualified solicitor with broad legal experience, as an in-house lawyer within a charity or large company, or in private practice. A great communicator, who enjoys providing advice to leaders and handling difficult decisions, you will be inspired by our mission to ensure all children survive, learn and are protected. In addition you will have:

  • Legal experience in some or all of the following areas; charity, commercial contracts, intellectual property, IT and corporate law.
  • Senior experience in a challenging role, including managing a team and working with senior leaders.
  • Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Effective negotiation skills with the ability to present complex issues clearly at all levels.
  • The ability to be comfortable working across a global movement in a rapidly changing global environment.

At Save the Children we are committed to the safeguarding and protection of children in our work. We will do everything possible to ensure that only those who are suitable to work with children are recruited to work for us. This post is subject to a range of vetting checks including a criminal records disclosure.

If you share our belief in the power of children, join the fight. It takes relentless determination, creativity and a real commitment to real change. Because every child should be able to make their mark on their world, and help to build a better future. We look forward to hearing from you.
