Job Purpose

Reflecting the breadth of this position, the role will be matrix managed by the Deputy General Counsel and the Head of Legal Compliance. The Legal and Compliance Counsel will support the organisation across a broad range of legal and compliance issues and encourage applications from all legal disciplines.  

The Legal and Compliance Counsel will be an integral part of a Legal & Compliance team that is responsible for providing advice, support and representation on legal, legal compliance and information security issues.

They will also support our delivery of our strategy, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements and advising on good governance and the effective management of legal risk throughout the organisation.

The role will divide their time between the commercial and contracting work and the compliance advisory work of the team.

This is a new role where the Legal and Compliance Counsel will be joining Save the Children UK at an exciting time in its history as we widens our international reach further to fundraise in new markets and work with new multilateral and bilateral institutional donors, philanthropic partners and in multi-market partnerships.

Main Accountabilities

The Legal and Compliance Counsel will be responsible for providing pragmatic and proactive legal, compliance and commercial support and advice to colleagues across Save the Children UK. Key duties include:

  • Providing legal support, drafting and advice to all levels of the organisation for contracts between Save the Children and third parties to support our core activities of Programming (International and UK), Fundraising, and Policy and Advocacy


  • Providing legal compliance advice on legal and donor requirements (e.g. donor due diligence, monitoring of policy and compliance requirements and investigation into and handling of compliance concerns or incidents)


  • Liaising with external counsel in the UK and overseas and assisting with the management of pro bono relationships


  • Advising employees on general legal issues and risks arising from Save the Children’s operations (e.g. charity fundraising laws and charity governance)


  • Developing, advising on, promoting, implementing and maintaining policies, practices and procedures to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, good corporate governance and the effective management of legal risk


  • Protecting our logo and advising on use of our name and logo internally and by third party partners


  • Assisting with the creation, maintenance and implementation of standard legal documents, guidance notes and policies, and with development and delivery of training to staff on legal issues


Person Profile



  • Qualified Solicitor in England and Wales (or equivalent qualification overseas)


  • Degree level education (or member of a professional body of recognised graduate status)


  • Minimum of 4 years post-qualifying experience


  • Broad experience gained in–house or in a pro-active private practice environment


  • Good knowledge of contract/commercial law and practice


  • Good knowledge of legal compliance requirements (e.g. in the areas of anti-fraud, bribery and corruption, anti-terrorism, and sanctions)


  • Good IT skills including ability to use Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel etc.) and online resources effectively





  • Highly effective at using legal skills to provide strategic, creative and pragmatic advice


  • Well-developed negotiating skills and high ethical standards


  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex issues clearly at all levels and with diverse audiences


  • Ability to build relationships and credibility quickly, including influencing at senior management level


  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgement when dealing with conflicting principles and dilemmas





  • A demonstrable commitment to the principles of diversity and inclusion and their practical application and integration in the work environment
