Education should be the means to break the link between demographics and destiny. Yet every week 109 children in England – equivalent to three full classrooms – are asked to leave their schools and never come back, with disastrous personal and societal consequences. The Difference, a young education charity, was founded to change the story on this lost learning. It exists to build the status and expertise of teachers working with vulnerable children, particularly those who are excluded from mainstream schools.

By 2030, The Difference want rates of exclusion and absence to be falling nationally and for schools to be better equipped to support all children, including those who may be vulnerable.

The organisation was born out of a year of research into school exclusions with think-tank IPPR. This research identified a lack of inclusion expertise in schools and proposed a new leadership development programme to fill this gap. In 2018, The Difference founder Kiran hired the team who took this idea from concept to reality, beginning work with our first schools.

The Difference is now a 22-strong team delivering multiple school leadership programmes, alongside a growing research and policy arm. The team is supported by our Youth Advisory Board, made up of young people who have experienced exclusion and who provide their expertise and insights on how school inclusion work should be done. This work is needed more than ever. Effects of COVID-19, coupled with the spiralling cost of living, have substantially increased levels of vulnerability. Schools serving excluded pupils face under-funding. The Difference has had excellent early impact but there is work ahead to capture this, share learning with schools and policy-makers, and grow our capacity to lower exclusions across England.

Our first permanent Head of Fundraising will drive the growth and sustainability of our fundraising function. Having proved the impact on exclusions via our programmes, you will help us generate the income to scale this success across the country. We need an expert fundraiser to support this journey. Key Responsibilities

• Drive the delivery of a new fundraising strategy for The Difference, motivating and involving key members of the team, particularly the Development and Impact Manager.
• Build and manage a dynamic portfolio of around 20-30 major individual prospects and donors with capacity to give £50k+, working with key stakeholders to solicit and close asks.
• Grow overall fundraised income from £1.25m to £1.9m annually in next 3 years.
• Write and submit funding proposals to major donors, trusts and foundations, and corporate supporters.
• Support the creation of engaging content from our impact data and case studies, for The Difference’s website and social media that could lead to online fundraising, including feeding into writing press releases as required.
• Build relationships with major trusts/foundations, donors or companies to secure 5 and 6 figure income
• Plan and deliver fundraising outreach to build out our list of fundraising pipeline.

We are seeking an interim Senior Manager to oversee our programmes and activities, engaging the engineering industry on diversity & inclusion, on a fixed term basis (up to 15 months).

As interim Senior Manager, Diversity and Inclusion (D&I), you’ll join our dedicated team of diversity professionals at an exciting time, with the opportunity to build momentum across a broad portfolio of impactful diversity and inclusion programmes. • The Graduate Engineering Engagement Programme (GEEP): Supporting students from underrepresented backgrounds in engineering to transition into engineering employment.
• The Inclusive Leadership Programme (ILP): Empowering leaders at different career stages to embed inclusive practices within their organisations.
• The online EDI Platform Culture+: supporting small and medium engineering organisations to develop behaviours and processes which foster an inclusive culture.
• Our wider programme of industry engagement events raising awareness, building understanding and inspiring action to implement D&I good practice within engineering settings.

Job Description

The Head of Advocacy and Policy will be responsible for developing an excellent Advice Service and Retention Team to support and advise students effectively to enable excellent student experience and satisfaction.

This role will lead on the development of effective insights, representation and support initiatives/campaigns for students, across our three campuses at Greenwich, Avery Hill and Medway.

This role will enhance work with the diverse student population of the University of Greenwich and lead a dynamic team to ensure students have consistent and accessible services that contribute to positive student experience.

This role sits within the wider Membership Services department, together with other key areas consisting of; Activities, Sport, Academic Communities, Representation and Democracy, we provide a high-quality service for students, that they can shape, steer and be at the heart of.

This postholder will be part of the GSU Senior Leadership Team and will be expected to contribute to department and organisation wide strategic development.

The post holder will:

• Have expert knowledge in areas of in relation to Advice and Retention and policies and legislation relating to such activity
• Support and develop strong student-led communities and campaigns in areas of: Advice, wellbeing and retention so that members can thrive
• Provide line management support to staff so that the team have up to date, specialist advice skills, knowledge and understanding of University regulations, policies and procedures that may affect the work of the Advice service and oversee engagement across Greenwich’s 3 campuses
• Undertake casework and provide expert advice for the team on all aspects of Advice
• Lead on the project management of wellbeing/health promotion campaigns and initiatives throughout the year, as well as any external bids through bodies such as OfS
• Oversee the Retention and Wellbeing Project work, and other relevant projects with external partners
• Lead on insights work relating to retention, wellbeing and support
• Lead on responses to external consultation and enquiry responses, including but not limited to OfS, Department for Education, OIA and Universities UK

Key Areas

• Be an engaged and active member of the Senior Leadership team, contributing regularly and working collaboratively with peers
• Provide leadership, strategic direction and day to day operational management to the Advocacy and Policy: recruiting and inducting members of staff, motivating, supporting and developing team members to ensure they have the necessary skills and knowledge for their roles as well as manage performance
• Develop a proactive results driven culture within the team, ensuring agreed objectives and targets are delivered, whilst promoting a collaborative approach to working with internal departments

Strategic Development

• Contribute to the strategic objectives of GSU, with a particular focus on advice, support and wellbeing in relation to the student experience
• Develop and oversee a new and innovative approach to proactive health and wellbeing campaigns that empower students to look after themselves and each other, as well as seeking support
• Lead on Access and Participation Plan Engagement, acting as the key contact on this area with the University.
• Build and maintain strong working relationships with relevant senior UoG staff and departments including Student Academic Services, Faculties and our partners at Kent Unio
• Develop and oversee the Advice service to support advocacy initiatives at multiple levels within the University, ensuring both students and University stakeholders view GSU as a credible and reliable source of information on the needs of students.

Monitoring and Evaluation

• Develop and oversee a structured approach to gathering, analysing and reporting on data relating to engagement of students with our services and to student views on key issues relating to retention and success
• Develop and oversee processes of collecting quantitative and qualitative data from casework to analyse trends and inform feedback for the SU and university
• Ensure evaluation mechanism are embedded in the teams working practises and that findings are shared and used to implement learnings with the goal of improving services
• Support Officers by preparing information, statistics and trends about key services to be shared within the University committee cycle
• Be responsible for the implementation of service standards for the Advocacy and Policy Team and to monitor and report on adherence to these standards
• Prepare materials to apply for any relevant quality mark accreditations for the service.

Budget and Financial Management

• Manage a budget relating to Advocacy and Policy including any restricted funds.
• Be responsible for the teams resources, ensuring these are effectively allocated, managed and controlled
• Review and establish processes, systems, polices and where appropriate standard procedures to maximise efficiency ensure deadlines are met and a positive return on investment
• Review and provide narrative for scrutiny at monthly management meetings with the Finance Team

Stakeholder management

• Collaborate with GSU colleagues, particularly the Student Voice and Engagement Teams to ensure we have a consistent approach to how we work with and support students
• Work with students through our representative structures and forums to ensure we shape services students want and need, taking into consideration the varying campus priorities
• Maintain strong relationships with key university staff to develop, deliver and evaluate collaborative projects and interventions supporting advice and retention
• Attend meetings relating to Advocacy and Policy as well as associated areas at both GSU, the University and externally, included, but not limited to regional networks

The Head of Philanthropy will play a pivotal role in fostering strong connections between the school and our alumni and parent community. We are entering the early stages of a new major philanthropic campaign, which will significantly scale the ambition for the school’s fundraising and engagement activity. As a team we have a major role to play in shaping the future of the school’s bursary ambitions. Our success will widen access and support the futures and aspirations of disadvantaged young people within our local community, and beyond. This is a senior fundraising role, reporting into the Director of Development. The ideal candidate will need to:

• Be able to demonstrate a track record of securing, administering, and stewarding significant gifts from donors, or significant experience in leading income generation activity through regular giving programmes within the charitable sector.
• Work with the Head, Bursar, Director of Development, Foundation Trustees, and other senior colleagues and volunteers to research, plan and undertake donor cultivation and solicitation meetings.

The successful Head of Finance and Procurement will have:

Following a recent team restructure, we are now ready to recruit our new Head of Alumni Programming. This position is part of the Alumni Engagement team within the Cambridge University Development and Alumni Relations office. The Alumni Engagement team is accountable for increasing the breadth and depth of engagement with the University's global community of over 320,000 alumni ambassadors, advocates and supporters who are critical to the delivery of our strategic goals and the University of Cambridge's significant potential.

This role will oversee a small team and report directly to the Director of Alumni Engagement. The Head of Alumni Programming is accountable for designing, and implementing an alumni content programme that strengthens alumni connections to each other and the University through the use of a segmented, data-driven approach and targeted engagement.

Working with colleagues within Development and Alumni Relations, the wider University, alumni, and external stakeholders the post-holder will design a content strategy for a global programme of in person and online events, email and social media marketing, hardcopy communications, and alumni websites.

About TASO

The Centre for Transforming Access and Student Outcomes in Higher Education (TASO) is an affiliate What Works Centre, and part of the UK Government’s What Works Movement. Our vision is to eliminate equality gaps in higher education (HE). Our mission is to improve lives through evidence-informed practice.

TASO was set up in 2019 and became an independent charity in April 2021. The Role

The Head of Communications and Engagement will lead TASO’s communications and engagement work plan to raise the profile of the organisation. They will also lead on TASO’s evidence mobilisation work plan, working with the Chief Executive, to ensure TASO’s research and evaluation outputs are effectively disseminated. 

This will involve ensuring a strategic approach to all communications activities, leading on the delivery of external-facing materials and publications, overseeing a vibrant social media presence and events programme. The role will have overall responsibility for a website redevelopment project over the next year. 

• Ensure a strategic and effective approach to communications, dissemination and stakeholder engagement.

• Lead on the design, branding and dissemination of innovative and engaging communications – both print and online, including oversight of the editorial and publication process for all TASO research reports and resources. 

• Lead on TASO’s evidence mobilisation plan, working with the Chief Executive and Research and Evaluation Team to ensure research outputs are effectively disseminated and achieve impact.

• Support the Chief Executive on delivering TASO’s policy aims. Lead on engagement with and monitoring of Westminster activities (e.g. select committees, reports, consultations) and liaise with key communications and policy stakeholders in the Department for Education, Office for Students and other relevant bodies.

• Take overall responsibility for TASO’s online and social media presence. This will involve overseeing a critical website redevelopment project over the next year and also includes oversight of the creation, upkeep and management of digital channels and content.

• Lead on TASO’s media relations, producing high quality press releases and news stories for the website, liaising with journalists, as appropriate.

• Lead on the delivery of a programme of stakeholder engagement events for a wide range of audiences. The events will range from small training sessions to larger events including publication launches and an annual conference.
