Education should be the means to break the link between demographics and destiny. Yet every week 109 children in England – equivalent to three full classrooms – are asked to leave their schools and never come back, with disastrous personal and societal consequences. The Difference, a young education charity, was founded to change the story on this lost learning. It exists to build the status and expertise of teachers working with vulnerable children, particularly those who are excluded from mainstream schools.

By 2030, The Difference want rates of exclusion and absence to be falling nationally and for schools to be better equipped to support all children, including those who may be vulnerable.

The organisation was born out of a year of research into school exclusions with think-tank IPPR. This research identified a lack of inclusion expertise in schools and proposed a new leadership development programme to fill this gap. In 2018, The Difference founder Kiran hired the team who took this idea from concept to reality, beginning work with our first schools.

The Difference is now a 22-strong team delivering multiple school leadership programmes, alongside a growing research and policy arm. The team is supported by our Youth Advisory Board, made up of young people who have experienced exclusion and who provide their expertise and insights on how school inclusion work should be done. This work is needed more than ever. Effects of COVID-19, coupled with the spiralling cost of living, have substantially increased levels of vulnerability. Schools serving excluded pupils face under-funding. The Difference has had excellent early impact but there is work ahead to capture this, share learning with schools and policy-makers, and grow our capacity to lower exclusions across England.

Our first permanent Head of Fundraising will drive the growth and sustainability of our fundraising function. Having proved the impact on exclusions via our programmes, you will help us generate the income to scale this success across the country. We need an expert fundraiser to support this journey. Key Responsibilities

• Drive the delivery of a new fundraising strategy for The Difference, motivating and involving key members of the team, particularly the Development and Impact Manager.
• Build and manage a dynamic portfolio of around 20-30 major individual prospects and donors with capacity to give £50k+, working with key stakeholders to solicit and close asks.
• Grow overall fundraised income from £1.25m to £1.9m annually in next 3 years.
• Write and submit funding proposals to major donors, trusts and foundations, and corporate supporters.
• Support the creation of engaging content from our impact data and case studies, for The Difference’s website and social media that could lead to online fundraising, including feeding into writing press releases as required.
• Build relationships with major trusts/foundations, donors or companies to secure 5 and 6 figure income
• Plan and deliver fundraising outreach to build out our list of fundraising pipeline.

Founded in 2016 and formally established in 2017, Youth Realities is a specialist youth and survivor-led charity supporting young people, primarily young women and girls aged 11-25, impacted by teenage relationship abuse.

HCT are now seeking to appoint a Director of Development to lead and deliver a trust-wide strategic approach to fundraising, in alignment with organisational needs and priorities. The director will develop and lead a high performing team and will be responsible for growing income from a range of sources, including trusts and grants, individual giving and developing a philanthropy programme based on a portfolio of designated funds to support strategic projects and ongoing revenue funding. This role sits on the SLT, with shared responsibility for setting and realising the organisation’s goals, strategic priorities, and business plan.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate:

• Significant experience in fundraising, including developing and implementing successful development strategies and securing income from a wide range of sources.
• Significant experience in securing philanthropic gifts at the five and six figure level.
• Strong track record in developing successful proposals and securing grants from trusts and statutory funders, with an ability to convey information in a concise, relevant, and compelling way.
• Experience of managing and developing high-performing teams, and senior stakeholder relationships, including donors and funders.
• Good working knowledge of charity finance, budgeting, and reporting.

Doorstep Library is a community-focused literacy charity dedicated to bringing the magic of books and the joy of reading directly into the homes of children who need our support. We are looking for an experienced fundraiser to head up our fundraising and marketing teams.

With one in four 11-year-olds leaving primary school unable to read or write properly, we recruit and train home and online reading volunteers to go into disadvantaged areas of London to help introduce young children (aged 0-11 years) to the pleasure and benefits of reading.

Our unique home-based service, whether in person or online, enables us to find the most appropriate books for every child we visit and build a relationship with the whole family. JOB PURPOSE

ABOUT THE ROLE

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

Development and delivery of the charity’s fundraising strategy

· To work closely with the CEO and trustee board to lead on the development, planning and delivery the Doorstep Library’s fundraising strategy, with further development of a longer-term strategy;

The role

This crucial role will help to strategically grow and develop our income and awareness. We are seeking a brilliant major donor fundraiser to play a crucial role in generating funds from HNWIs through major gifts and legacies. As Senior Philanthropy Manager you will step into a newly created position in the team that will focus on creating and implementing a compelling major donor programme.

Your focus will be to inspire giving for investment in the Hall, including initiatives to improve accessibility and sustainability, as well as the Hall’s pioneering community engagement programme. You will be a creative, driven and strategic individual who has a track record of developing engaging supporter journeys and soliciting transformational gifts.

As Senior Philanthropy Manager you will:

• create and deliver the major donor strategy focused on driving growth and income from HNWIs;
• personally manage a portfolio of philanthropists giving 5, 6 and 7-figure gifts;
• oversee and develop the prospect pipeline, proactively researching potential supporters and utilising networks from senior stakeholders involved in the Hall;
• consistently deliver exceptional stewardship journeys, knowing how to capitalise on the incredible array of events at the Hall as powerful engagement tools;
• produce and present compelling cases for support to secure transformational restricted and unrestricted donations;
• provide leadership and support to the Philanthropy Coordinator;
• work closely with the rest of the Philanthropy team to identify and maximise the lifetime support of donors.

Ideal skills and experience: 

• Demonstrable experience of managing and securing 5- and 6-figure+ gifts from HNWIs
• Proven track record of delivering a strong major donor strategy/programme
• Experience identifying major giving opportunities, building a pipeline and being proactive with prospect research
• Exceptional interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with ability to engage with a wide range of stakeholders of all levels
• Line management experience, and keen interest in motivating and developing direct reports
• A creative flare, team player, proactive and ambitious
• Passion for the arts, sciences and the work of the Royal Albert Hall

Hybrid working, 3-4dpw in Royal Albert Hall, Kensington office. This role will require occasional evening and weekend work in line with the Hall’s events programme, in particular those attended by your donors and prospects.

Introducing Harington

Harington is an Ofsted registered specialist college based in North London rated good, working with around 52 young people with learning differences aged 16-25. Our mission is to create an inclusive environment, that delivers outstanding personalised education, learning, and support, which leads to further education, employment opportunities, and a fulfilling life for each of our students. 

We specialise in horticulture, retail and general employability. Our students undertake individualised learning programmes and supported internships that lead to vocational qualifications and achieving other aims. We support the wellbeing of our young people through providing mentoring, counselling, enrichment and other one-to-one support.

Our charity has two learning centres in Highgate and Hornsey. We also operate a gardening business and two charity shops, providing income for our charity, work experience placements for our students and employment for 14 young people. We work with local employers and partners to provide work experience and other opportunities for our students.

The Role

This is an exciting time to join the Harington, as we have recently appointed a new Principal/CEO. We want to ensure that the Harington is able to fulfil and secure its mission to benefit our young people, both now and into the future.

In the next year we will consolidate what we do well and seek to strengthen the areas where we could do better. The Interim COO will work with all stakeholders and closely with the Principal/CEO to review, plan and implement the necessary changes. The role is initially for 9 months, but it is anticipated that it will continue after the initial review and planning period.  

This Interim Chief Operating Officer role will:-

1)Support the development and implementation of the strategic plan and through the annual Operations Plan and Budget, and be responsible for measuring and evaluating progress against goals and targets

2)Drive excellence and efficiency across Finance, HR, Governance, Operations, and IT, strengthening and embedding the right policies, systems, processes, technology and infrastructure ensuring seamless execution and robust management of risk.

3)Manage our three commercial businesses (two charity shops and Harington Gardeners) so they meet our social, learning and business aims

4)Oversee Harington’s fundraising so we secure the income we need from trusts and foundations, individual donors and community fundraising

5)Ensure effective management of the buildings and estate of a multi-site organisation, and the support services required to provide a suitable and safe environment for learning and working, that meets the required health and safety standards

6) Ensure that all staff feel valued and supported, with effective management of staff, operations and administration

The person

 You are an exceptional senior leader that is passionate about achieving the best outcomes for young people with learning differences.

Working as part of the senior leadership and management team you will ensure that Harington is a safe environment where students can learn, work, thrive and grow. You will ensure our staff team is valued and supported, and our management team and trustees are kept up to date and fully informed.

You are an energetic, organised, and positive team player, similarly comfortable working independently. It is a very varied role and one that needs calm focus as well as spontaneity and initiative.

You are adept at getting to the root of an issue, finding the solution and making things run smoothly and efficiently.

We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements and would consider 4 days a week or compressed hours.

Essential skills

• Successful senior leader within a medium sized organisation for a minimum of three years, with a results-proven track record
• Worked in charity and/or education setting
• Sound understanding of financial management, reporting and accounting systems
• Experience of successfully managing and implementing changes to improve the way things run
• Highly motivated and driven self-starter, able to adapt quickly when priorities change
• Highly proficient in Microsoft Office products and database management systems
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience in creating high-level reports and presentations

We are looking for an experienced CEO or senior charity manager, able to manage the business functions of a charity that is just starting out. You will have a proven track record of managing a small, prosocial organisation and setting up the systems necessary for success. You will have skills to work strategically, have business management skills, be able to lead and grow a team and work relationally. 

As CEO an important goal will be to put the charity on a firm foundation for long-term sustainability. You will work with our fundraising consultant to ensure a steady income stream of core funding, ensuring financial stability for employees and building partnerships with local organisations to maximise impact and sustainability through collaborative work and partnership bids. This requires considerable, skilled networking and relationship-building, both within the Church’s Community Hub, with our existing partner VCFSE organisations and in the wider sector, including local Councils, PCNs and the ICB.

You will also be principally responsible for the organisation’s HR function, risk and compliance, as well as its monitoring and evaluation of impact (for quality assurance and fundraising purposes). This means ensuring best practice is observed and maintained in these and related areas, including line management, service policy, financial management, safeguarding and data privacy. 

Knowledge and/or lived experience of mental health difficulties and the relevant support services/treatment modalities is essential; experience working within the mental health sector is highly desirable. We are seeking someone who is passionate about mental health and views this role as an exciting, long-term opportunity to make a significant difference to the lives of thousands of adults in Birmingham.
