Director of Professional Standards
£92,988 - £102,267 pa, plus excellent benefits

Reporting to the Chief Executive, and forming a central part of our Senior Management Team, we are seeking to appoint an outstanding individual to take on the post of Director of Professional Standards. The successful candidate will lead a wider portfolio of responsibilities including accountability for overseeing first class education and training for psychiatrists, promoting recruitment and retention into the psychiatric workforce and leading on the College’s international workstreams.

The successful candidate must bring with them experience of leadership gained within a comparably complex membership organisation, with recognised expertise in delivering first class professional education and membership support. You must demonstrate the ability to provide strong and inspirational leadership to a large team of over 60 staff with the ability to instil a culture of high performance and exceptional service throughout. Essential to success is an ability to work effectively with a range of partners both internally and externally and an alignment with our values.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists is the professional medical body responsible for supporting psychiatrists throughout their careers from training through to retirement, and in setting and raising standards of psychiatry in the United Kingdom. Employing 235 staff and serving a membership of over 21,000 in the UK and abroad, we are building a strong and progressive College, one that strives to ensure our members are able to deliver high quality, person-centred care in well-resourced psychiatric and wider mental health services.

Reporting directly to the CEO, you will use your passion for enabling impact locally and across the globe to be the leading voice and relationship-builder with new and existing funder partners. You will get to work with organisations such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Comic Relief, UBS Optimus Foundation and many other leading UK, US and international funders. You will also utilise your existing network to identify and win new business and strategic partnerships, by finding leads, nurturing relationships and closing contracts.

As Lightful expands their reach and impact, you will have ultimate responsibility to identify, develop and steward strategic relationships with a wide array of philanthropic funders, which will enable small charities and non-profits to become more resilient through digital skills, tools and training. Lightful’s approach is to build strong, long-lasting and impactful partnerships, which can be bilaterally or in cohorts of collaborative funding partners within specific geographies or around impact cause/theme areas. There is no limit to how partnerships can flourish at Lightful.

You will inspire the Partnerships team, be a collaborative member of Lightful’s senior leadership team and work closely with a highly passionate and engaged board of directors and colleagues across the Programme, Impact, Engineering, Design, Finance and People teams.

The successful candidate will have a varied set of skills and experiences, with strong commercial acumen and a deep knowledge of the philanthropic sector and a proven track record of developing plans and executing those plans to reach large revenue targets, ideally from an existing network within the sector.

The Waterways Ombudsman Scheme is in place to ensure the independent handling of complaints made against the Canal & River Trust and other navigation authorities. The Waterways Ombudsman is appointed by the Waterways Ombudsman Committee who oversee the working of the Scheme and the remuneration of the Ombudsman on an independent basis. The Waterways Ombudsman is a certified Alternative Dispute Resolution entity and a full voting member of the Ombudsman Association.

The Waterways Ombudsman Committee is recruiting for a new Waterways Ombudsman.  We are aiming for a July 2024 start date.

Waterways Ombudsman

Working part-time and in a location of your choosing, you will take responsibility for all aspects of the ombudsman scheme. This includes handling complaints from initial enquiry through to resolution, as well as managing relationships with, the Committee, and the Canal & River Trust and other navigation authorities, waterway organisations and the media. You will also be responsible for administrative elements of the scheme, such as managing the website and preparing the annual report. The job involves working flexibly around four to five days over a month at a rate of £600 per day, which is paid through the independent Waterways Ombudsman Committee.

We’re looking for someone with a solid understanding of how public or private sector ombudsman schemes work. If you haven’t gained direct experience within one already, then you will certainly have worked at a senior level within a legal environment, dispute resolution system or similar. Sound judgment and integrity are important, as are strong analytical, problem-solving and negotiating skills. You must also be able to work alone and in a highly autonomous way.

First and second stage virtual interviews will be held by the Waterways Ombudsman Committee from mid to late May with a view to final appointment 

ARB is seeking to appoint Legally Qualified Chairs to the committee to lead the committee, which must include a legally qualified member (this role) an architect and lay person. 

Legally Qualified Chair Committee Members – Professional Conduct Committee (PCC) 
Time commitment: up to 30 days per year 
Terms of engagement: Four year term, with the possibility of reappointment for a further four years 
Remuneration: £743.75 per day

We would love to hear from you if you are a qualified solicitor or barrister (or advocate in Scotland) with experience in chairing tribunals or conduct committees, have an understanding of professional regulation and are able to work with a range of stakeholders ensuring proceedings are fair, efficient and effective.

ARB’s statutory responsibilities are contained in the Act, and cover six main areas:

• Prescribing the qualifications needed to become an architect in the UK
• Keeping the UK Register of Architects
• Ensuring that architects meet our standards for conduct and practice
• Investigating complaints about an architect’s conduct or competence
• Making sure that only people on our register offer their services as an architect
• Acting as the UK’s competent authority for architects
