Job description

ShareAction and the global system of finance

It is said that “money makes the world go around” but the global financial system in its current form is in danger of making our world a very inhospitable place indeed for future generations.

Though it has lifted many out of poverty, today the global financial system has an oversized impact on many of the existential challenges we face. The growing gap between rich and poor in terms of both income and health, as well as climate change and biodiversity loss, are all examples of this. Investment, lending and insuring decisions can enable destructive and exploitative industries or they can support a transition to a more sustainable way of living and use of precious resources. The latter approach is known as responsible or ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) investment.

ShareAction’s vision is of a world where the financial system serves our planet and its people. Our mission is to define the highest standards of responsible investment and to drive change until these standards are adopted worldwide. We work towards our mission by:

  • advocating for change in the investment industry using our research and rankings
  • campaigning with allies to strengthen investor stewardship and change corporate behaviour
  • pushing for public policy reform to transform the financial system

2022 sees us at a critical juncture for people and planet, and so too is the work of ShareAction to harness the power of the investment system for good. As we continue to ramp up the level and the pace at which we are working, our Fundraising team is playing a critical role to ensure this can happen. We are looking to recruit a new Fundraising Manager to support the development and maintenance of a portfolio of committed trust, foundation and statutory funders, ensuring that ShareAction has sufficient income to match our ambitions for growth.

Key responsibilities:

  • Leading on, or being a key contributor to, securing 5-7 figure multi-year grants from UK, EU and Global trusts, foundations and statutory sources across a range of social and environmental issues.
  • Working alongside our Senior Fundraising Manager to ensure a co-ordinated and collaborative organisational approach to fundraising, including regular planning and update meetings with project teams, frequently reviewing and updating Fundraising resources and knowledge-sharing opportunities, and maintaining up-to-date and thorough records on Salesforce and SharePoint.
  • Cultivating and maintaining positive funding relationships through timely reports and updates, meetings and events as appropriate.
  • Supporting colleagues across SA to construct fundable projects and submit high quality bids and applications, working with finance to construct accurate costings for proposed work.
  • Working with the Senior Fundraising Manager and the Fundraising Assistant to ensure all monitoring, evaluation and learning processes are robust and effective and meet the varying needs of our funders.
  • Taking a strategic approach to identifying and researching prospects and leading where necessary on opportunities for raising income for new and existing programmes and projects.
  • Maintaining a professional knowledge of trust/foundation and statutory fundraising within the UK, EU and more widely, and identifying appropriate learning opportunities in association with the Senior Fundraising Manager in order to facilitate this.

Please note that this list isn’t exhaustive and the role might change slightly from time to time.

We are looking for a passionate, determined individual, with the following experience and skills:

  • Demonstrable experience in trust and foundations fundraising, ideally with bid/proposal writing experience for 5-7 figure projects.
  • Excellent English communications skills, both written and verbal and have the ability to communicate complex information and ideas.
  • Exceptional organisational, project and time management skills with the ability to work under pressure, plan and prioritise work effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to prioritise and manage multiple competing priorities, completing work to the highest standard.
  • Experience of using CRM systems to manage a Trusts and Foundations portfolio, ideally Salesforce.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word and Excel.

  • Experience in statutory fundraising.
  • Experience in EU/US based trust and foundation fundraising.
  • Experience in fundraising for public health/health and/or medical causes.
  • Experience in fundraising for climate, environment, social welfare, equality, poverty causes.
  • An understanding and passion for the role of the investment system in driving positive change in corporate behavior.
  • Experience of working with Office 365, particularly SharePoint.
