Job Description

Salary: Circa £43,000

The Head of Media will create strategies and plans aimed at increasing the profile of Sightsavers, its programmes and the issues it works on with UK and internationally influential media, as well as through social media. Leading a team of 6, the role will build relationships with key journalists, collaborate with other communications teams across the organisation and contribute to effective organisational communications management.

Eye health, neglected tropical diseases and disability inclusive development are the 3 key areas in which this post will oversee the overall external communications objectives for Sightsavers. The Head of Media will also develop and execute the annual PR and media, including social media, strategy, manage multiple projects, lead, approve and be responsible for initiatives delivered by the team and lead the development of creative proposals for media and fundraising appeals, such as UK Aid Match and Radio Four Appeals.

Sightsavers is a global organisation and as such the position will support and advise our international teams in delivering media activities, as well as helping oversee the appointment and management of external media and PR agencies. Global development of media communications best practices and ensuring that there are an appropriate team of spokespeople trained and available for media duties is also a key responsibility.

Reputation management is a vital role of the Media Team, so the role will support the Director of News and Senior Management by addressing any media issues that pose a reputational risk to Sightsavers. The post will also ensure the management of processes and procedures in relation to media, social media and celebrity ambassadors are kept up to date and relevant.

The ideal candidate will have a degree (or similar) or significant work experience in journalism and communications, have an excellent ability to identify news angles, possess a substantial level of experience working with or in a media environment and charitable or international development media and PR team.
