Job Description

We are seeking a volunteer co-ordinator/manager to join our small team to expand our flagship volunteer visiting and befriending service which covers the whole of Somerset. The successful candidate will cover Mendip and South Somerset and will recruit new volunteers, assess needs of potential beneficiaries who wish to access the service, complete paperwork, and make successful introductions.  Each beneficiary is matched with their own regular volunteer and both parties are supported throughout.

The service reduces isolation and loneliness and offers beneficiaries the opportunity to take trips out, socialise and have help with reading, correspondence and other useful tasks.

The organisation: Somerset Sight works in partnership to deliver effective practical and emotional support for people with sight loss across the whole county. Our role is to provide practical and emotional support to enable people with sight loss to adapt, remain independent and live a full and active life. We have recently been honoured with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in recognition of the impact we make in the local community.

Role/ Person:  You will be self- motivated and a team player, energetic, enthusiastic, focused and results driven. You will have excellent communication and people management skills and be a proven motivator of people. You will understand how to effectively work within agreed boundaries and manage volunteers to do the same. You will have demonstrable experience in managing people and challenging situations that arise. You will be able to assess needs of beneficiaries and their families and will enjoy supporting both beneficiaries and volunteers. You will be IT literate, have experience of report writing and know how to keep accurate records. You will be conscientious and will possess a hard-working, positive attitude and will have a proactive approach to problem solving and ability to manage your own workload and use initiative. You will be flexible and may have to work occasional weekends and evenings and will be committed to working for a not for profit organisation and all that it involves. You will be a competent driver and able to find obscure locations. This is a part time role initially 21 hours a week with potential to increase.
