Sparkle are currently looking to recruit a Fundraising Manager for a truly inspiring, award winning children’s charity, based at the Serennu Children’s Centre in Newport, South Wales.  This unique, beautiful, state of the art building, just off the M4, is home to an integrated day centre for children with disabilities/developmental difficulties, providing health, social care and leisure opportunities in one location. 

Serennu is the only centre of its kind in the UK and arguably within Europe and the rest of the world and it is leading the way in terms of integrated health care for children with disabilities and developmental difficulties. Serennu was built in a joint initiative between Sparkle and Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB) and acts as a support network for the whole family unit with a wide range of facilities and leisure activities on offer.

In the role of Fundraising Manager you will develop and lead the Sparkle fundraising and events strategy, build on established partnerships with key donors and focus on identifying and growing new fundraising partnerships and opportunities. Working alongside a dedicated marketing and communications manager, this is an exciting opportunity for the right person.

With a challenging but achievable annual initial income target of 200k per annum, the successful candidate will be creative, driven, dynamic, passionate and innovative. You will possess a high level of emotional intelligence, an entrepreneurial attitude to fundraising and impeccable integrity.

About Sparkle

Sparkle are the main, official charity supporting the Serennu Children’s Centre and the Nevill Hall Children’s Centre. Serennu is a state-of-the-art building which provides treatment, care, information, consultations and leisure services from under one roof removing the burden on individual families & providing continuity of care. Nevill Hall is an integrated children’s centre attached to Nevill Hall hospital which provides treatment, care, information and consultations at the centre.

Sparkle’s principles are to ensure that children with a disability or developmental difficulty and their families are fully supported to participate in valued childhood experiences and have access to the same range of opportunities, experiences, services and facilities as other children.

Several hundred children visit the centres each week and Sparkle has to raise more than £600,000 every year to fund the vital services we support.

Some of the services and support offered by Sparkle include:

  • providing access to family liaison support and play workers.

  • activities including swimming lessons, holiday activities, multi-skills and clubs for young children, teenagers and siblings.

  • access to parent support groups and young people’s forum.

  • family activities including swimming, fun days and film screenings at the Serennu Children’s Centre’s very own 3D MediCinema.

Job Purpose

The role is both tactical and strategic in its intent and its purpose is to achieve an annual income target of £200k during the first 12 month period, rising to 300k for Year 2 in order to meet the ambitions of the charity.

Key Responsibilities

The ability to opportunistically take advantage of donation possibilities and persuasively selling the charity’s cause together with an interest in, and commitment to, the cause you are raising money for

Capable of confidently and convincingly promoting Sparkle to prospective donors and having a natural ability to create an instant rapport with them, retain their interest and develop strong long-term relationships

Responsibility for developing and leading the Sparkle fundraising and events strategy setting out the goals for the year and the steps to be taken to improve the fundraising and events activity in terms of income, satisfaction and engagement

Responsibility for managing partnerships with key donor partners and developing new fundraising partnerships and opportunities with organisations and businesses (SMEs & corporates) and other fundraising target audiences including service users and the general public

Developing and implementing a robust and sustainable calendar of fundraising events

Ensuring that all fundraising and events activity is measured and investment versus yield is projected, recorded, transparent and reported

Capable of delivering funding growth year-on-year consistent with the values of Sparkle

Stimulate, encourage and support fundraising activities carried out by individuals, small, community organisations and associations on behalf of Sparkle

Appreciation of grant-making and how this effectively contributes to the overall income generation target for Sparkle

Development and management of fundraising committees, business development advisory groups, etc.

Accountability for Sparkle fundraising events, in partnership with the Marketing and Communications Manager ensuring a sufficient return on investment is generated by each event

Responsibility for project management and event support for individual, corporate and Sparkle events

Responsibility for small trust and foundation applications, circa 2k per application

Actively developing community fundraising, for example churches, masonic lodges, small businesses, supermarkets, etc.

Analysis of weekly and monthly income to include regular reporting, exception reports and evaluations on areas of responsibility

Leading on the research into, and the development and management of, key donor relationships in order to meet the charity’s priorities at any given time which includes (but not exclusively): corporate donors, media and event partners and individual donors

Working collaboratively with the Marketing and Communications Manager and support, where necessary, with the preparation of campaigns and identification and recruitment of Ambassadors

Advising the Trustees on all financial requirements in relation to the area of responsibility and be accountable for remaining within approved expenditure limits set by trustees for events and appeals, etc.

Ensuring effective diary management

Identification of opportunities to raise awareness of Sparkle including giving talks, attending local events, cheque presentations and networking events

Developing and maintaining links with existing individuals and groups, including local companies, schools, churches and community organisations

Ensuring the Sparkle bespoke donor database is effectively managed to allow for exemplary supporter care and regularly analysing and reporting on the data

Ensuring all monies/ donations received are recorded accurately and banked in a timely manner, in accordance with the Sparkle Financial Policy

Responsibility for securing and recording ‘gifts in kind’

Any other reasonable requests, as required by the Sparkle Team Lead, Children’s Centre Improvement and Development Manager and/or delegated Trustee.


Special Conditions

Working Hours

The post holder will be required to work flexibly. This post will require evening and weekend working and hence flexible working options may be considered subject to achievement of targets.

The rate of pay is a consolidated one, which includes any enhanced payments for evening and weekend working.

The post holder will be expected to volunteer their time, at least four days per annum to support the work of the charity and children’s centre.

The post holder will be required to regularly travel between children centres.


Disclosure and Barring Service

This post is subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring check with a children barred list check.

This post is subject to an exception order under the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. This stipulates that all previous convictions, including those that are ‘spent’ must be declared.
