An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Marketing and Communications Manager within Sparkle, a truly inspiring, award winning children’s charity based at the Serennu Children’s Centre in Newport, South Wales. This unique, beautiful state of the art building, just off the M4, is home to an integrated day centre for children with disabilities/developmental difficulties, providing health, social care and leisure opportunities in one location.
Serennu is the only centre of its kind in the UK and arguably within Europe and the rest of the world and it is leading the way in terms of integrated health care for children with disabilities and developmental difficulties. Serennu was built in a joint initiative between Sparkle and Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB) and acts as a support network for the whole family unit with a wide range of facilities and leisure activities on offer.
In this very “hands on role” you will develop the Sparkle marketing and communications strategy and lead on its implementation. This includes, but is not limited to, taking the lead on media relations, creating and optimising digital and social media outputs together with the project management of Sparkle events. Developing and promoting the Sparkle brand both internally and externally is essential, to ensure that the awareness and support of the charity is maximised.

Sparkle are the main, official charity supporting the Serennu Children’s Centre and the Nevill Hall Children’s Centre. Serennu is a state-of-the-art building which provides treatment, care, information, consultations and leisure services from under one roof removing the burden on individual families & providing continuity of care. Nevill Hall is an integrated children’s centre attached to Nevill Hall hospital which provides treatment, care, information and consultations at the centre.
Sparkle’s principles are to ensure that children with a disability or developmental difficulty and their families are fully supported to participate in valued childhood experiences and have access to the same range of opportunities, experiences, services and facilities as other children.
Several hundred children visit the centres each week and Sparkle has to raise more than £600,000 every year to fund the vital services we support.
Some of the services and support offered by Sparkle include:
providing access to family liaison support and play workers.
activities including swimming lessons, holiday activities, multi-skills and clubs for young children, teenagers and siblings.
access to parent support groups and young people’s forum.
family activities including swimming, fun days and film screenings at the Serennu Children’s Centre’s very own 3D MediCinema.
Leading and giving strategic direction on all Sparkle marketing and communications both internal and external to the children centres. Areas will include, but are not limited to, social media platforms, website, stakeholder groups, Ambassadors, radio and television media.
Dynamically responding to, and optimising on, every opportunity presented to Sparkle which will promote the work of the charity.
Development and implementation of an agreed marketing and communications strategy to build brand awareness and promote Sparkle
Leading on developing relations with the media and developing and approving all media communications ensuring exceptional quality control, for example proof-reading, editing and making sure all content supports the principles and values of Sparkle
Leading project management, planning, budgeting, execution and evaluation of marketing events and activities
Managing the promotion of stories – proactively seeking means of raising our profile by utilising and/or developing the wide range of key staff, Ambassadors, celebrities and stakeholders
Managing workload, prioritising and scheduling activities to meet deadlines for multiple different marketing activities, PR communications and events
Developing and maintaining excellent relationships with key partners and contractors
Developing and leading on an internal communication strategy, ensuring internal stakeholders are briefed on marketing activity
Creating highly engaging and relevant digital content for Sparkle and analysing success of this content according to performance indicators
Leading, developing and maximising the use of social media platforms to ensure ‘reach’ and ‘fit’ is optimised and proactively identifying new opportunities in digital outreach
Monitoring and controlling income and expenditure budgets for agreed campaigns, identifying discrepancies and ensuring re-forecasts are completed to agreed timescales
Using existing and new research to identify new opportunities, keeping up to date with competitors’ activities and industry developments through networking and training and acting as an advocate for digital media across the organisation
Developing and optimising digital and social media outputs, including text, images, video and audio to reach wide-ranging target audiences
Submitting data and media selection requests, preparing results spreadsheets and producing end of campaign reports to discuss with Trustees and make suggestions for future improvement
Providing exemplary supporter care to ensure long term commitment to Sparkle
Responsible for the maintenance and development of website material to ensure it is accurate, up to date, exciting, interactive and of high quality
To champion Sparkle and be a role model and Ambassador for the values of Sparkle
Providing project management and event support for Sparkle events with corporate and individual funders and charity partners; as well as support for events at which Sparkle is the beneficiary charity
Working collaboratively with the Fundraising Manager to ensure that fundraising events activity is measured and meets income targets, with year on year improvements in terms of revenue, satisfaction and engagement
Hosting tours of the children centres for donors and VIP’s, to include facilitating arrangements for the attendance of any required staff, parents, children/young people and the local media
Identifying, securing and supporting suitable Ambassadors to maximise income potential and promotion of the charity
Preparing and delivering community presentations to share the work of Sparkle and attending community cheque presentations as required
Leading on the four annual Sparkle family events at Serennu Children’s Centre and supporting as necessary with the events at Nevill Hall Children’s Centre
Any other reasonable requests, as required by the Sparkle Team Lead, Children’s Centre Improvement and Development Manager and/or Trustees.
Leading, delivering and maintaining an effective administrative support function for all fundraising activities of the charity, including managing correspondence, meetings and data collation and reporting
Managing the process of correspondence, ensuring that supporters are responded to in a timely and effective manner
Supporting the Fundraising Manager in ensuring requests/tasks identified via the Sparkle bespoke donor database are effectively completed to the required deadline
Providing regular reporting and evaluation on areas of responsibility
Identifying, purchasing and managing stock levels of Sparkle fundraising materials and merchandise
Responsibility for the effective identification, distribution, collecting and recording of income collection boxes and donations
Working within Sparkle guidelines, producing resources such as posters, sponsorship forms, leaflets, donor newsletter, fundraising packs and thank you certificates to support and promote Sparkle.
The post holder will be required to work flexibly. This post will require evening and weekend working. The rate of pay is a consolidated one, which includes any enhanced payments for evening and weekend working.
The post holder will be expected to volunteer their time, at least four days per annum to support the work of the charity and children’s centre.
The post holder will be required to regularly travel between children centres.
