Head of Communications and Engagement
£40,000 per annum
Location: Milton Keynes (with flexible home-working arrangements)
Contract: Permanent

We’re looking for an extraordinary person to make the most of a remarkable opportunity: to transform the lives of spinal cord injured people through building a new vision and direction for communications, engagement and campaigning, on-line and region by region across the UK.

The Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) is the leading national charity supporting individuals who sustain damage to the spinal cord resulting in paralysis. SIA is committed to a singular vision: a fulfilled life for everyone affected by spinal cord injury. Everyone has a right to live a fulfilled life and that means the life they choose, a life that has the same opportunities as everyone else. Our work in campaigning, education and support is based on the personal experiences of our members. Being a user-led organisation is important to us; as well as our 13,000 members and growing, just under half of our staff and 90% of our trustees live with spinal cord injury.

As part of our ambition to raise the voice and influence of our members across the UK, we are bringing together our Communications team and Campaigns team which will be led by our Head of Communications and Engagement. You will be joining the charity at a pivotal time in our development journey. Our passionate team are driving forward ambitious plans to be a true Association for all, to build on our success and achieve greater impact, and this new post will play a critical role in achieving our ambitions.

We’re looking for someone with experience and skills in leading communications, marketing and engagement, as well as campaigning and movement-building in charities, businesses or campaigning bodies. This exciting new role has been created for someone with a proven track record in developing communications and marketing products and strategies that increase uptake, voice and relevance to users and members. We want someone who can oversee and support the development of public and government-facing campaigning.

The key aspects of this role include:

  • Delivering a dynamic and effective charity-wide communications strategy
  • Driving campaign initiatives in an energised and collaborative way
  • Strategically enhancing membership engagement through targeted approaches and innovative techniques
  • Contributing to the organisational strategy as part of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) providing direction and focus across the charity
  • Line management responsibly of two key teams
  • Providing support, leadership and direction driving performance in line with the strategic objectives and milestones
  • Providing visible and proactive leadership across all departments.
  • Publicly represent and act as a spokesperson to the charity to support programmes, fundraising and campaigns as a senior representative of the Association
