Post Title Recovery Hub Community Chef

Responsible to Supported Housing Manager

Purpose of Post You will be working at our Residential Recovery Service Acorn House, which supports men in recovery from addiction. You will be responsible for providing and educating our residents around nutritious and healthy meals.

Salary: Grade 2: £18,000 - £20,000 Pro-rata

Location Spitalfields Crypt Trust, Acorn House, 116 - 118 Shoreditch High Street, London, E1 6JN

Hours 20 hours - Monday to Friday, 4 hours per day (2 -6pm)

Spitalfields Crypt Trust (SCT) is an East London charity providing practical help, support and training to people who have been homeless and suffering from addiction. It runs a homeless drop-in, a Recovery Hub (which includes an abstinence-based residential recovery accommodation, a Primary Programme and a Continuing Care Programme), supported houses and two social enterprises supporting people in recovery from addictions to put their lives back together. Our integrative approach is based on the ‘Recovery Capital’ methodology and is a whole-person approach, which takes into account physical, cultural, social, human and spiritual factors and assets.

 Cooking and preparing a variety of fresh nutritious evening meals and other refreshments.

 Supervising and including residents as food service assistant, organising their food preparation duties.

 Ensuring that appropriate levels of hygiene and cleanliness are maintained in the kitchen at all times.

 Washing, cutting and preparing food before it is cooked.

 Taking into account the wishes of clients when planning all menus and ensuring one vegetarian meal is offered or non read meat.

 Making sure good nutritional standards are maintained when preparing meals.

 Enquiring if any resident have allergies or unable to eat a particular food due to religious beliefs, then cooking meals accordingly.

 Responsible for high standards of food, hygiene, heath and safety, COSHH.

 Reporting any accidents, food hygiene, Health and Safety issues to line Manager in accordance with Company policies

 Keeping an eye on the temperature of cookers and fryers when in use.

 Regularly monitor and record temperatures by carrying out daily checks on kitchen refrigeration equipment.

 Assisting n ensuring meals are delivered within budget and wastage is kept to a minimum, ensuring quantities to be cooked are measured out.

 Ordering of weekly supplies, receiving and checking deliveries and monitoring their quality.

 Drawing up weekly menus with good nutritional standards that fit within the budget.

 The washing of all utensils, cleaning of the kitchen including all kitchen equipment, cooker, deep fat fryers used for the preparation of meals.

 Constantly checking the quality of the food being served to residents.

 Ensuring appropriate clothing is always worn whilst in the kitchen.

 Ensuring stock rotation is adhered to and the kitchen and larder are always well stocked.

 That all Health and Safety regulations are adhered to and food hygiene standards are kept to a high standard.

 Able to teach the residents basic meals before they move on into either independent living or our move-on houses.


•Ensure all policies of SCT are maintained and observed.

•Full knowledge of the Statutory Regulations contained in the Health & Safety at Work Act.

•Comprehensive understanding of Food Hygiene Regulations.

•Experience of high volume catering.

•Detailed knowledge of seasoning and recipes.

•Fully conversant with various cooking methods like boiling, baking, roasting and steaming.

Person Specification Essential


Skills and Knowledge

•Educated to GCSE or equivalent standard.

•Experience of maintaining records and systems to a professional standard.

•Minimum one year’s experience of working in a similar environment with experience of this service user group (rough sleeping, alcohol and drug addiction).

•Good interpersonal and communication skills with staff members and residents, able to remain calm and polite.


•Ability to educate and support residents to develop cooking skills through supporting with preparation of meals.

•Ability to determine priorities, set realistic timescales and organise own time effectively.

•Ability to create new and varied menus for the various seasons.

•Ability to manage a budget

•To ensure you keep up to date with developments in their relevant sector, enhancing your knowledge and practice.
