If so, St Giles Trust is looking for an Exploitation Prevention School Project Coordinator to join our SOS+ team and play a vital role in a groundbreaking pilot aimed at identifying and supporting young people before they are at risk or exploited.

Youth violence, gang culture and county lines affects communities across Luton and Bedfordshire. Young people are vulnerable to exploitation and entrenchment within criminality, and many who end up in the system are not known to the services that could have helped them until it’s too late. We want to change that. Our award-winning SOS+ Service works with young people in a variety of settings by delivering sessions and workshops in schools, Pupil Referral Units (PRUs), Community Centres and to Youth Offender Teams. The service’s mission is to prevent children and young people becoming involved in gangs and youth violence by equipping them with tools, knowledge and support delivered by experts with lived experience.
About this vital role
Acting as a bridge between the school and community-based support options, you’ll ensure that the Luton Multi-Agency Gangs Panel (MAGPan) are better able to support young people, ultimately leading to less exclusions and more individuals prevented from harm. We’ll also rely on you to identify signs of risk, including the more subtle behavourial signs that are often missed by other professionals. As well as identifying young people at risk, you’ll need to make supported referrals to the MAGPan that you’ll also attend and feed into, so that a local intelligence picture of need can be developed and stronger links established with the local community so that they are better able to support young people before they offend. Along the way, you’ll work with a cohort of at-risk students, offering direct 1:1 mentoring support and acting as a positive role model, demonstrating a real life alternative to criminality. Ensuring School staff are better able to recognise the signs that a young person might offend or be exploited will be important too, as will developing new content in partnership with the Service’s Content & Quality Lead and attending partnership meetings.
What we are looking for:
• A relevant qualification to a good standard or be working towards one (this includes any recognised qualification of ‘A’ Level standard or above in any aspect of social care, advice work, youth work etc.)
• Substantial experience of assessing the needs of children and young people who are at risk of significant harm and a proven ability to deliver sessions to groups and/or mentor young people effectively
• A track record of providing support, advice and advocacy and communicating the needs of clients to other professionals and using support plans to enable people to successfully access support services
• Experience of working in a high intensity environment as part of a multi-agency team to achieve positive outcomes for young people and establishing links to further the aims of a project
• An understanding of the issues and risk factors facing this client group plus knowledge of drug distribution networks across county lines
• Emotional resilience, self-motivation, the ability to lead by example, work remotely and autonomously and confidently speak in front of large groups to deliver key messages
