Accountable to : Chief Executive Officer

Job details:

  • The Head of Fundraising will develop the vision and strategy for future fundraising, working with their team to achieve income targets and increase our supporter base, in particular developing new income strands and making the case for support to a range of funders including statutory bodies, corporate, as well as individuals and foundations.
  • In doing so, they will lead and develop a team of fundraisers to achieve fundraising objectives for the organisation.
  • Working closely with the Senior Leadership Team, this role is required to plan, co-ordinate and oversee the management of agreed activity levels and in doing so govern the workforce, budget and the achievement of excellent standards of fundraising.
  • Furthermore, this role will be further critical in creating a climate and culture which enables our people to realise their potential within a supportive, safe, continuous improvement and learning environment, conducive to positive levels of health and well-being.
  • Consistent with other heads of service, this role represents a senior management position which, whilst currently accountable to the Chief Executive, will also become a member of the Senior Management Team (SMT) i.e. Heads of Service, which in turn reports to the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) i.e. CEO, Directors, Chief Volunteer.

Key duties and responsibilities:

Strategic & Operational Planning

  • Leading the development of the Charity’s fundraising strategy, translating into effective operational plans, policies and procedures and implementing these.
  • Taking a lead role in identifying development opportunities in fundraising, including digital fundraising, major donors, marketing and communications consistent with the strategic goals of St John Ambulance Cymru.
  • To be accountable to the Chief Executive for ensuring that fundraising performs to plan, deploying resources effectively and ensuring compliance with legislation, regulation and best practice.
  • Leading the development and implementation of a diverse portfolio of fundraising and marketing activities to maximise the sustainable income generation potential for the Charity.
  • Identifying opportunities and new income streams to develop the size and scale of the organisation’s supporter base.
  • Managing external agency relationships to ensure key outcomes are met.
  • Reporting against agreed performance indicators to the SLT and Trustees, assessing key issues, reporting budget variance and making recommendations.
  • Working with other members of the SMT and SLT to develop and embed a culture of engagement and data collection across the whole organisation.
  • Accountable for data management and insight, ensuring our systems and processes meet organisational need and comply with external regulation including GDPR
  • Working with SLT to develop a pipeline of projects for investment ensuring business cases are suitable for fundraising are produced in a timely manner.
  • Working towards achieving an ambitious income target that supports the delivery of our work at a national, regional, and local level.
  • Develop a strong case for support for St John Ambulance Cymru and build successful campaigns around it.
  • Lead on positive communication and education, both internally and externally, on the importance of fundraising for the organisation.
  • Create and manage the fundraising department budget to include re-forecasting and contingency planning, including preparing income and expenditure forecasts, monitoring and tracking financial performance, taking personal accountability for meeting agreed targets, effectively identifying areas of existing, and emergent need and ensuring fair and effective allocation of resources.
  • Speak on behalf of St John Ambulance Cymru at events and presentations as required.
  • Act as an ambassador, protecting and promoting the good name and reputation of the wider business.

Internal relationships

  • To provide high standards of leadership and effective management including the monitoring and reviewing of workloads, ensuring the satisfaction of people liaising with the Fundraising Team.
  • Work with the Senior Leadership Team to identify funding needs and identify opportunities to meet these needs with the fundraising team.
  • Ensuring the Board and Senior Leadership Team (SLT) understand legislative and regulatory developments, social trends, and research findings and uses such information and evidence to inform and enhance our fundraising programmes.
  • Work closely with the Senior Leadership Team to ensure fundraising products and initiatives are linked to other areas of the charity.
  • Act as a central point of contact for assigned projects, liaising extensively with identified internal stakeholders.

Line management of fundraising team

  • Line management and performance management for the fundraising team.
  • To represent the Fundraising team through engagement with stakeholders, funders and the wider public, including relationship management with corporate supporters and major donors.
  • Working under your own initiative to identify new and emerging opportunities that could benefit St John Ambulance Cymru.
  • Promote a culture where staff feel empowered and accountable for the service they provide, seeking service improvements and delivering their agreed individual and team objectives; and managers are supported to lead, motivate and develop staff who feel valued.
  • Line managers have a responsibility to check in regularly with staff and recognise stress symptoms, know how to access support and promote the health and wellbeing of their staff.
  • Provide inspiration, mentorship and coaching to all members of the Fundraising Team, encouraging cross-team and cross-organisational working.
  • Role modelling the Charity’s values and behaviours and embedding a safe, and positive climate and culture within all services in the directorate.

Business oversight

  • Develop and maintain corporate partnership and fund prospecting and stewardship plans.
  • Build and grow a corporate fundraising function for the whole of St John Ambulance Cymru.
  • Oversee the development of a legacy pipeline and stewardship plans.
  • Ensuring the delivery of an excellent supporter experience, including recruitment, retention and cross-stream support journeys.
  • Work with the marketing and communications team to deliver successful campaigns and appeals through the press, print, digital marketing, and social media.
  • Lead on data management and ensuring donors are approached about relevant campaigns and no supplication of contact is taking place across income streams.

General duties

  • Keep abreast of fundraising developments in the charity sector in particular, especially through the use of peer networks, trade bodies and press.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties as requested your Chief Operating Officer, CEO and board of trustees.
