Job description

Social Transformation Pastor (part time)

St Stephen’s: Loving God. Growing Disciples. Transforming Communities.

Role Overview

  • We are seeking an experienced leader - either ordained or with significant lay experience - to oversee the pastoral care and social transformation ministries at St Stephens
  • Reporting to the vicar, you will bring energy and skill to advance these key St Stephen’s ministries, especially through equipping and developing the staff members and volunteer leaders in these ministries
  • You will join an existing clergy team of 3 (vicar, part-time associate vicar, and curate) to lead this aspect of ministry as well as sharing in the work of the ordained clergy (if ordained)

Ministry context

  • St Stephen’s is a designated Resourcing Church in the London Diocese, committed to developing its staff team and volunteer leaders for effective ministry both at St Stephen’s and beyond
  • As we emerge more fully out of Covid lockdowns, we anticipate further opportunities to show God’s love in practical ways to our wider community, building on the ways we have done that during the pandemic

The pastoral and social transformation ministries offered at St Stephen’s currently include:

  • Seniors

A vibrant mixture of St Stephen’s members and others in our local community, with opportunities to draw people into closer connection with Christ and his church

  • Drop-In

A ministry to vulnerable adults, some of whom are homeless, who receive a warm meal, practical and pastoral support

  • Pastoral care

A small team providing support through 1-to-1 work, small groups, bereavement courses and signposting to counselling

  • Prayer Ministry

A mix of small teams offering prayer ministry, prophetic discernment and intercessory prayer

  • Collaboration

We also work in partnership with local debt advice, foodbank and pregnancy crisis initiatives

Objectives of the role

  • To provide oversight and strategic direction for St Stephen’s church in the areas of pastoral and social transformation ministries, in line with our vision
  • To support and develop the staff and volunteers leading and serving within these ministry areas
  • To champion, shape and oversee prayer ministry within the life of the church
  • To supervise / line manage the staff team members and key volunteer leaders associated with these ministries – which currently includes:

  • A Seniors Pastor (0.5)
  • A Pastoral Care co-ordinator / Safeguarding officer (0.5)
  • An Ordinand on placement at St Stephen’s
  • 4 Licensed Lay Ministers (LLMs)

  • To journey with those exploring a sense of call to ordination (or LLM ministry)
  • If ordained, to conduct occasional offices and undertake general clergy ministry within the life of the church – to include but not exclusively: some leading and preaching at Sunday services, baptisms, weddings, funerals, hospital visits, midweek communion services

Person Specification

  1. Proven leadership abilities and experience in overseeing, equipping and developing others
  2. Good team player contributing to the work of the clergy team
  3. Excellent communication skills
  4. Experienced in pastoral care for people of a variety of ages in a Christian context
  5. Proven emotional robustness
  6. A heart for all those engaging with St Stephen’s, including those who are more vulnerable

Working requirements & remuneration

  • 24 hours per week (working days to be agreed)
  • Clergy terms for 0.5FTE including either pay or house for duty
  • Working from home/office dependent on COVID restrictions
  • Six month probationary period

Please note, like many churches we are embracing ‘hybrid’ ways of being church (ie both in person and online) as we emerge out of the lockdown, in line with the Government’s roadmap and with guidance from London Diocese
