Head of Communications - 12 month fixed term contract
To review the Society’s existing communications strategy and devise and deliver a Society-wide communications strategy in light of the Covid-19 environment and in alignment with the SVP overall strategic plan.
Lead and manage the Communications Team
Take responsibility for the Communications budget, highlighting significant variances in expenditure where relevant
Recruit and induct new staff as needed, in accordance with the Society’s policies and procedures
Organise and lead team meetings and training events
Promote a flexible, “can do” approach to the delivery of communications for other departments
Work closely with directors, managers, the national communications team and local operational centres to review the current communications strategy in light of the new and evolving landscape and assess its effectiveness in supporting the objectives of the board’s five-year plan
Identify significant changes to key internal and external audiences, their characteristics and behaviour; assess the impact of these changes on the current communications strategy and their implications for the future strategy
Undertake benchmarking in relation to charities with a similar turnover and which operate within the same or comparable sectors
Produce a comprehensive report with recommendations for a revised, audience-centred strategy to support the board’s five-year plan, covering the spectrum of disciplines and engagement channels including media and public relations, brand, internal comms, marketing, broadcast, digital and social media, audio, video, print and online content
Review the resource requirements to deliver the proposed strategy
Establish objectives, metrics, KPIs and implementation timescales and work closely with the National Communications Manager to assign responsibilities and put in place project management systems to support their delivery
Establish, maintain and promote a processes and procedures guide to ensure timely and efficient management of projects and requests from other teams
Oversee the implementation and delivery of the strategy, undertake periodic reviews, make adjustments where necessary; provide ongoing support to the Communications team and produce reports as required
Lead and support forward planning of integrated communications activity across the Society
Research and draft content for the Society’s publications, marketing materials and digital content and lead on specific projects
Provide creative, operational and editorial support for internal and external communications
Ensure that campaigns and activities across all departments optimise the way the SVP is viewed by the public and its stakeholders
Ensure our purpose and impact is relevant and understood across all owned, earned and paid channels.
Provide effective leadership and build strong working relationships with departments across the organisation to ensure the integrated communications strategy achieves maximum impact with internal and external audiences
Work with the National Communications Manager in responding to reputational crises
Organise and deliver communications training for the team, other staff and members
