Benefits and Entitlements Advocate

to support Deaf and disabled victims of domestic abuse and hate crime

(£ 26,390 per annum, pro-rata for 28 hours per week)

Funded to 31.3.2022 by Trust for London

Stay Safe East is a leading user-run agency working with Deaf and disabled survivors of domestic violence, hate crime and other abuse. We are passionate about inclusion and promoting the human rights of disabled people to safety and a decent income.

The advocate will provide long-term Benefits Advocacy to our clients, some at a critical point in their lives, and support them to obtain a living income and any additional resources they need to enjoy a quality of life. You will assist clients to apply for welfare benefits, support them with assessments, appeals and challenging sanctions; you will assist with budgeting, refer clients for Debt Advice and help them to obtain small grants and entitlements such as a Freedom Pass. You will co-produce guidance on the income needs of Deaf and disabled survivors.  In Year 2, you will also run monthly benefits advice sessions for disabled people at a local community centre.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced benefits adviser who would like to offer more specialist long-term support to clients and get to know them. You must have a proven track record of success. You must be effective, self-motivated and an excellent communicator who is able to work under pressure and deal sensitively with disabled people who may be traumatised.

We particularly welcome applications from women (the majority of our clients are female survivors of domestic abuse), and from disabled people. We are a user-led organisation of disabled people where peer support and positive role models are essential to building the long term self-confidence and resilience of our clients. We have a positive policy on training and employing disabled people. We aim to make our office and systems as accessible as possible to our staff.
