Head of Partnerships and Public Affairs

(England South)

£36,101 per annum (pro rata for part time hours)

Base: South – travel to Bristol/Reading


About the role

As the Head of Partnerships and Public affairs, you will report to the Director, England South. And as a member of the England South Leadership team, you will work closely with other Heads of Partnerships and Public Affairs across Sustrans.


You will lead a small team across England South and directly line manage three Partnerships and Public Affairs Managers, a Communications Manager and a Senior Business Development Coordinator. 


Contributing to the strategic direction of England South, you will lead policy and public affairs activity across the region, providing strategic public affairs advice and political counsel to the Regional Director and team.


You will build and manage internal and external relationships with key people such as Elected MPs, Mayors, Cabinet members and others within local government, professional bodies and authorities.


This role will require travel and work at locations as necessary to undertake projects on behalf of Sustrans. Candidates should be based within the South geographical area with regular travel expected to a nominated hub/office base in Bristol and Reading.


About you

You should have experience of leading, motivating and managing a team. With the ability to build relationships with ease across a wide range of people from varied backgrounds, and you will also be comfortable working with and communicating through all forms of media.


We will look for evidence of your experience in developing and implementing a Strategic Communications Plan and to showcase your project management skills while working within PM frameworks. You will be skilled in interpreting information from multiple sources to advice colleagues at a strategic level, the ability to analyse the impacts of local and national policy changes on our work is key.


We ask you demonstrate your knowledge of political processes at local government level; a background in transport or the built environment would be advantageous, to help you advocate for sustainable transport and better places across the region, but it is not essential.
