Background to the role:
Suzy Lamplugh Trust is the UK’s pioneering personal safety charity and leading stalking authority, established in 1986 following the disappearance of 25-year-old Suzy Lamplugh whilst at work. We work towards creating a society in which people are safer - and feel safer - from the prevalence of stalking, harassment, aggression and violence, achieved through supporting people; education; and campaigning.
Our stalking helpline advice and advocacy service offers support and advice to thousands of victims of stalking every year. Caseworkers advocate on victims’ behalf with police, social services and other statutory or victim support agencies. The Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) has awarded funding to Suzy Lamplugh Trust and partner agencies to continue the proof of concept Multi-Agency Stalking Intervention Programme (MASIP) in London. This is an intervention programme for stalking perpetrators, in an interdisciplinary setting involving partners from the health and criminal justice services as well as the voluntary sector. We have also secured funding from MOPAC to develop a trauma-led approach to advocacy as part of the London Stalking Support service.
The post will be primarily based at the Suzy Lamplugh Trust office in Vauxhall, but regular travel to other locations across London, including the Stalking Threat Assessment Centre (STAC), will be required. Travel to other locations in the UK may also be required occasionally.
We are looking for an ambitious, dynamic leader to lead this team and ensure that its work has maximum impact and is embedded into the core output of the charity.
Overall purpose of role:
- To work closely with the CEO and Head of Policy to ensure robust management of operational activity across the Trust, with specific focus on the National Stalking Helpline, advocacy service, Stalking Threat Assessment Centre, and London Stalking Support Service.
- To support the CEO in external representation of the organisation.
- To ensure the safe and effective delivery and development of the Trust’s provision for victims of stalking.
- To promote the work of Suzy Lamplugh Trust including the National Stalking Helpline and advocacy services, strengthening our voice as an authority on stalking and personal safety - both at work and in everyday life.
- To be a key part of the Trust’s leadership team, deputising for the Chief Executive as required.

Service delivery and development
- Provide strategic support, leadership, safeguarding and oversight to all areas of service delivery, including the work of the National Stalking Helpline, stalking advocacy services and London branch of the MASIP programme.
- Work with the commercial and finance teams to develop financially sustainable new projects, ensuring that timely information is provided to support the design and development of funding bids and any reports to funders on activities delivered.
- Proactively develop relationships with other agencies which enable effective collaborations and two-way signposting/referral to ensure beneficiaries get the best advice and support available.
- Perform the role of safeguarding lead for the Trust, ensuring staff have appropriate training and ensuring compliance with safeguarding policies.
- Support frontline staff and volunteers in dealing with complicated or sensitive enquiries.
- Ensure quality assurance of the operational services of the Trust.
- Support in the delivery and development of stalking training and consultancy packages, including briefings to other services.
Policy and research
- Support Head of Policy and Chief Executive on the co-ordination of responses to policy consultations, development of research, representing Suzy Lamplugh Trust at external meetings with funders, stakeholders, influencers and decision-makers.
- Ensure that the Chief Executive and other Suzy Lamplugh Trust colleagues are appropriately briefed to represent the organisation’s position on a range of practice related policy issues.
- Identify opportunities for new partnerships, services, and influencing opportunities that will strengthen the Trust’s voice and expand its reach.
Management and leadership
- Lead a team of staff and volunteers
- Identify and address skills gaps or development needs of staff, particularly in respect of new product development
- Manage relevant departmental budgets
- Represent the Operations department on the leadership team
- Deputise for the Chief Executive, internally and externally, as required, including with the media
- Manage projects and budgets for the Operations team and restricted projects within the department remit, ensuring all service responsibilities and project deliverables are met within approved budget.

Skills and abilities
- Ability to represent the Trust externally and deputise for the Chief Executive as required
- Significant experience, at least 4 years, offering strategic and operational direction to front line VAWG services (s)
- Demonstrable ability to synthesise large amounts of complex information into accurate, persuasive arguments
- Proven analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent oral and written communication
- Convincing influencing and negotiation skills with people at all levels (s)
- Understanding of the policy contexts in which Suzy Lamplugh Trust operates
- Leadership skills: the ability to inspire a team to strive to meet challenging goals
- Management skills: proven ability to coach and support others while delivering testing personal objectives, interpreting corporate targets into clearly communicated work plans
- Collaboration and teamwork: proven ability to work collegiately with other senior leaders, represent the Trust externally

- Understanding of the financial constraints of working in a small charity, and funding mechanisms within the sector, with proven ability to manage budgets (s)
- Representing an organisation to senior external stakeholders, including government and the media (s)
- Providing briefings to senior leaders to represent the organisation on key issues
- Experience of delivering training courses and/or presenting material at conferences
- Developing and managing services to people in challenging circumstances (s)
- Crisis and change management, maintaining high quality of delivery of new and existing services in changing environments (s)
- Designing and contributing to successful funding proposals or bids and reporting back to funders (s)
- Line management including setting targets and appraising individuals’ performance
- At least 4 years’ experience in senior management positions, operating at a strategic level and contributing to strategy development and delivery (s)
